Q: A 24 hour ambulatory measurement showed only 12% above 140 and 5% above 90 during the day. The sleep time readings were all below 130/90. My doctor’s diagnosis is “normotensive”. What does that mean?
A: On average, your blood pressure is less than 140/90. Treatment with drugs is not recommended until your pressure is greater than 139/89 the majority of the time. At this point, your doctor feels your blood pressure in within the normal range and so has labeled you as being normotensive.
