Q: Are there any negative consequences of a large gap between systolic and diastolic pressure? My systolic averages 150 and diastolic 60. I take Diovan 16mg in the morning and Bystolic mg at night.
A: The difference between your systolic pressure and your diastolic pressure is your pulse pressure. A high pulse pressure, such as yours at 90, suggests your blood vessels are not healthy. I suggest you talk to your doctor about getting your blood pressure into better control.
So..I wonder what is a good pulse pressure?
If you have the recommended blood pressure of 120/80, your pulse pressure would be 40, subtracting 80 from 120. I’ve read a healthy pulse pressure is 40-70.
The idea of Pulse Pressure is nonsense. That would assume a pressure of 180/120 is healthier than 150/60.
I have AF and my blood pressure is up and down for my age is 75 Iam very fit and walk about 2 miles every day also go on a skipping rope for 30 times each day is there any advice you can give to me..
Please make it a habit to do 15 minutes of “pranayamam “- a yogic breathing excercise – twice a day and you will see the difference in one month. You can seel google search help in practicing the breathing excercise and please do it correctly .
All the best
I’ve always had a high pulse of between 80 and 90, and my systolic pressure has been between 120 and 135 with the diastolic being between 65 and 85. I am very healthy and always have been.
best wishes
40-50 is an “athlete’s pulse” most of ours are higher, but I too read 70 is the max for resting…
Agree with above comments. I have been active for most of my life and heard the same; 40 would be ideal, 70 the very maximum though. I would be concerned if my pulse pressure was higher than 50. But it does not mean that for instance 150/110 would be fine! Follow Dr Rowena’s advice and get it sorted out, may be see another doctor for a second opinion.
What if the pulse pressure is below 40? Is this considered still in the healthy range?
I am 73 yrs old. I take 10mg of Florisomide, 10 grams of Atentonle, and 10 gr. of lisinopril daily. My BP as taken now is 110/56. Comment please
Bob, change doctors. 110 is unacceptable. can you get any exercise?? good luck
Why is 110 unacceptable. It would seem that 110/56 would be a “perfect” blood pressure…. Mine is 107/65 to 112/70 pulse 50 resting and non-resting. My BP was really high 150/100 average but I had to stop drinking because I am on heavy meds for pain. Within two months BP dropped significantly. Right now I’m on Bystolic 10mgs once a day, was for BP now for migraines. Its amazing how much alcohol affects your BP….
****High blood pressure in adluts is defined as a consistently elevated blood pressure of:150 mm Hg systolic and 90 mm Hg diastolic or higher(this info is outdated, and incorrect). I believe the numbers are now 140/80. Otherwise, a very good quiz.GD Star Ratingloading…
mine is usually 122/87 that means my pulse would be 35….even less than 40, what does it mean…healthy or unhealthy? I am 38 years old!
are there some foods that could be helpful for blood pressure?…I’m starting to have trouble with my bp.
At the risk of sounding boring:
lots of hi-fibre vegetables, NO ADDED SALT,
whole grains, nothing white: flour, rice, refined anything,– garlic (raw) that can be chopped and mushed with lemon and olive oil to make it palatable.
Yes there is! The Curry leaves used in sambar and Rasam and other South Indian vegetables is the best solution! Take a Bunch of curry leaves, remove all the stems wash and dry the leaves just fry with a sample oil in a pan till it turns dry & crispy. Keep aside and cool it then make apowder of it add some salt to taste or you can add fried chilly pepper as per your taste requirements.
Take the powder with cooked rice mixed with some edible oil along with a Large Mug of Buttermilk as you daily Lunch. You will be controlling you High and Low B.P.
you follow the recipie prescribed by N.S.P and you will end up with sky rocketing cholestrol levels, i can guarntee that.
NS Padmanabhan, where do you purchase the curry leaves.
salt is the culprit …..doctors say
I read somewhere Omega 3 helps in the beginning stage
Don’t you love it when someone is going to a doctor, getting over-medicated and still having problems. Then they are told they better go to a doctor and get MORE medication. If this were anything else, it would be obvious they are simply extracting money at the expense of the patients health.
I experience pains in the left hand, leg and left hand side of my waist. This is with serious ache in the left part of my chest. Does this have to do with my pressure? The last time I checked my BP, it was within 120/85. Please advise
I’m a middle Eastern 77 years old man, taking 8mg Atacand daily. Was told, years ago, that I have an athletic heart, my average BP 145/65 with a resting pulse of 55. Is there anything you can advise me. Thanks.
Blood pressure of 103/36 when I went to the Dr today should I be concerned
The diastolic pressure of only 36 that you gave must either be a typo or you must have misunderstood your Dr. With a pressure that low you wouldn’t be able to walk out on your own power. Even diastolic pressures in the 50s run the risk of passing out.
It seems that many people are confusing pulse with pulse pressure. Pulse is how many times your heart beats in one minute. A lower pulse is better unless it gets TOO low, in which case you could pass out. Pulse pressure is the difference (gap) between your pressure when the heart is beating (systolic) and when your heart is at rest (diastolic). That’s what should be ~40. A pulse of 40 would be VERY low. A large gap is unhealthy and normally tends to happen in older people whose blood vessels have become less elastic and can no longer expand to lower the pressure when the heart beats.
My BP is 151 / 80 Would you please comment. I know the Diastolic at 80 is good and Systolic is mildly high. But what is this BP saying? How dangerous is this BP. Thank you.
Oh and I’m 59 years old.
