Garlic, ginkgo, St John’s Wort could all upset bleeding/clotting balance, study found
(HealthDay News) — People taking the prescription blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin) may up their risk for health complications if they also take herbal or non-herbal supplements, new research reveals.
In fact, eight out of the 10 most popular supplements in the United States could spark safety concerns with respect to warfarin, while also impacting the drug’s effectiveness.
“I specifically looked at warfarin use, but the real issue is that even though herbal supplements fall under the category of food, and they’re not regulated like prescription drugs, they still have the effects of a drug in the body,” cautioned study author Jennifer L. Strohecker, a clinical pharmacist at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
“Warfarin is a very high-risk medication, which can be associated with severe consequences when it’s not managed properly,” she added. “However, warfarin is derived from a plant, sweet clover. In fact, many of our prescription drugs came from plants. So, it’s very important for patients to recognize that just because an herb is marketed not like a prescription drug [that] doesn’t mean it doesn’t have similar effects in the body.”
That’s interesting and true in some respects. However, drugs are supposedly controlled, but in reality, many thousands die from the use of “controlled” prescription drugs every year.
My question… why does everyone have to have the same blood pressure, the same cholesterol and the same everything? Humans are different. Some people do very well with high cholesterol and some don’t. Some people have higher blood pressure than others. Warfarin is “controlled” by doctors, but what level is really optimal for a certain person? If they take Vitamin K, why isn’t that enough? If they take other things for thinning the blood, why aren’t they enough? The answer given by doctors is b/c the “level needs to be controlled”. Why and what is the optimum level per person? They DON’T know. They go by what the drug company tells them. Yes, most prescription drugs come from plants, but are changed just a little so drug companies can patent them. Usually the change is detrimental to the person, but you will never hear that from a doctor, unless they actually practice preventative medicine. It’s up to the patient, but usually they are so afraid of the condition or sickness, they just do what the uninformed doctor tells them to do. It’s really disgusting. Dr. John Lee, an eminent doctor who wrote many books, graduated from Harvard Medical School. He himself said that most doctors just memorize what they are taught – even in Harvard. Then they become a doctor and never learn another thing.
If one has any indication of intestinal fissure, one can possibly see this as a result of taking a blood thinner. I had these problems for many months and four doctors did not see a solution to them.
Then one day, it occurred to me that the pain and the bleeding might go away if I stopped taking baby asperin, a blood thinner. Many months after stopping, the problems are long gone. Perhaps it is the same with other blood thinners! Good luck!
Respectfully, Warfarin is the evil here, not Ginkgo, or Vitamin E, or fish oil, or Garlic……..
Know that there are many alternatives to the bodily poisons that are called medicines, i.e. drugs. If you must take poisons, recognize the dangerous aspect of those drugs not the preposterous danger of valuable foods and supplements!
I AGREE WITH WITH CARESTIA,WARFARIN CAN CAUSE INTERNAL BLEEDING .
I have been taking HCTZ 25mg for some time now. It has been good to me with no problem at all. Recently I thought of taking a natural supplement. I started taking RESVERATROL and it was good initially. Then I read the whole thing again and realized that it had (blood Thinning). I did not tell my Doctor but I figured I was slowly hurting myself because HCTZ and Resveratrol are both blood thinning…I had to stop the resveratrol and continue with my HCTZ. I thought I should share this with you guys.
