Q: 5. My blood pressure is normally 130/70. When I eat anything at all the pressure drops to 80/39 and I get dizzy about 30 minutes later. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes to get back to normal. Can you explain?
A: It sounds like you have a condition known as post-prandial hypotension. After eating, blood is sent to the stomach to help with digestion. If the rest of the body fails to compensate for the blood going to the stomach, low pressure and dizziness can occur. You need to make an appointment to see your doctor to get help.
The Merck Online Medical Library contains further discussion on Postprandial Hypotension.
Make that appt w /doc ASAP !!
My mom has high blood pressure. Her doctor told her to take measurement after meal, and then take medication accordingly. Otherwise, if you take measurement before meal, which in your case is 130, you go ahead and take the medication. After meal your BP becomes 80 (may due to blood gathers in the stomach), and with the effect of the medication, you were lucky not to faint. What do you think ?
