Q: I started taking BP medication about 3 years ago. About 2 years ago I started to notice I was not hearing well and it has kept progressing at an alarming rate. I am now wearing hearing aids. A scan of my head shows no abnormalities. Could the BP medication be affecting my hearing?
A: Drugs have side effects. It is certainly possible your blood pressure medicine is affecting your hearing. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor to find out if hearing loss has been reported as a side effect of the medicine you are taking. Ask about all the medicine you are taking, not just your blood pressure medicine. Many men don’t realize erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra can cause hearing loss.

Hearing loss is a common side effect of many pharmaceuticals, including many beta blockers. Although I already had tinnitus and some hearing loss, my tinnitus got twice as loud as it had before while on Metopropol. My ears felt funny and I had loud spikes in my T as well. Another reason to get off these meds or never get on them. High BP is treatable by changes in diet and lifestyle. I knocked mine down by 20 points in less than two months! My increased tinnitus has not gone away by the way. Many of these drugs are ototoxic but doctors neglect to tell their patients. My dad was almost totally deaf after years of being on BP meds (and other ototoxic drugs).My mom mentioned it started shortly after he got on BP meds.
By the way, high BP can also cause hearing loss, another good reason to get it under control naturally.
I had the same problem with hearing loss after taking blood pressure medicine since May 16,2008. I was tested and have a 40% hearing loss in 2009. It is probably worse now,however I came off half the drugs they had me on. I now take a calccium Channel blocker 180MG,and a beta blocker 12.5 mg. Another side effect has been insomia and depression. Have never taken ED drugs so I know it is the HBP drugs .
Can BP medicine cause kidney stones and or renial failure? Or can it contribute to it? I appreciate it my friend has that and is on BP medicine.
Yes. Lisinopril can contribute to renial failure. Ask your doctor to reduce the amount or change your meds.
I took Lisinopril last year and was told by my doctor it was protective of the kidneys. Do these doctors know what they are talking about?
