Q: I am a 68 year old Type 2 Diabetic. Is a vegetarian or meat diet better for me?
A: You can help control your diabetes with either type of diet. The best diet is one you will faithfully follow and will keep you at a normal weight. Frequently type 2 diabetics are overweight so getting to a normal weight is very important. For suggestions about meal planning go to: http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/food/

a vegetarian diet is great but be sure to only use low carbs and if you use grains must be whole grains – nothing white in your diet (bread/rice/pasta etc). Plenty of low glycemic fruits and vegetables. At http://www.drmirkin.com there is a lot of great info.
I am a 75 yr old male, my wife past away 3yrs ago.
I live alone in a large home. I can take care of my self in all ways.
My problem is cooking for a single diabetic male
Any suggestions?
cook soups with different vegetables such as carrots, green peas, cauliflower, sweet potatoes ect. It is easy- one pot meal, healthy, nutritious. Also make
salads with tuna, boiled chicken breast, chick peas and
add your favorite boiled and raw vegetables such as
tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, potatoes (not so much),carrots, beetroot, onions. Use olive oil or
grape seed oil and apple sider vinegar for dressing. Adding herbs spices without salt enhance the taste of the salad . Make shakes: paw paw, banana, low fat milk mix together, good to go!
I have seen people reverse diabetes on a vegan diet of leafy greens, nuts, seeds, beans. Dr. Fuhrman’s books Eat to Live or Eat for Health gives many examples. This happens all the time at Weimar Institute in California as well. I am sure there are other programs doing the same thing. I don’t believe a meat diet is good for any disease. I don’t have diabetes, but I have seen it work for me with weight loss and bringing down hypertension.

Dear Admin,
You should read this book: “DR. NEAL BARNARD’S PROGRAM FOR REVERSING DIABETES”.
It has fantastic scientific information on diabetes and clinically proven tests to reverse diabetes.
I should mention that I have nothing to do with Dr. Barnard. I just happened to watch him on a PBS tv station then decided to buy his book. It made sense to me and I have been following his diet for few months now. I will have my blood tests in 2 months to find out the results. I can’t tell whether if this diet works for me or not. I have pre-diabetes.
With nitrite working so well on High blood pressure , why more doctors prescribe any combination of nitrite products for BP patients when the are so effective and inexpensive?
thanks
