Q: Does being on a HBP medication along with HCTZ- a diuretic eventually affect the kidney if you’ve taken it over a period of time?
A: Uncontrolled blood pressure will eventually affect the kidneys. You take medicine to help keep this from happening. You want to keep your blood pressure below 130/80 to help prevent kidney damage. It is the high blood pressure, not the medication to treat it that usually affects the kidney. Triamterene/HCTZ did indeed affect my kidney function. My Dr. took me off of it. She said it’s the HCTZ part that causes the problem. Now I have to be cautious about all kinds of things that can affect kidneys.
Oct. 1st is my next regular annual check-up. I hope there is improvement but I’ve read the damage is done and that’s it. I’m hoping that’s wrong.
I am presently not taking any BP medicine & I have noticed it is very high again. Like 185/105. I know this is very high. I was taking 160MG Diovan & it helped control it fairly well. Usually like 140/90 or a little lower. But it made me dizzy & sort of feverish feeling so I quit taking it. I am afraid I am playing with fire here. I feel great & I play tennis 2 or 3 times a week. I’m 5’8″ tall & weigh 178. I just would like to know what I should do about this high BP. Thanks.
I was put on medication about five months ago. Before that– all my blood test numbers were perfect…before the meds. Two months ago I had another blood test and the kidney number is low…very upsetting…I truly believe the medication is causing this. My doctor will se me in October which is three months later…for another blood test. This is driving me crazy. For the past four months my BP is on average 108/71 or less. I have lost a total of 23 pounds, doing excerise three times per week, doing the respeRate excerise four times per week, eating well, sleeping well, no discomfort. My kidneys were better before the meds…very confused!
Hctz will deplete all your vital nutrients in your body such as Magnesium which is very vital to your body & high blood pressure. It will deplete the very important nutrients to make your body function so you are better off going natural.
Diuretics like hydrcholorthiazide upset the electrolite balance in the body by eliminating not only salts, as they reduce fluid volume in the body which lowers blood pressure, but they also reduce important electrolites like potassium which is very beneficial to the heart and in regulating blood pressure. Natural diuretics like celery and dandelion leaf are high in potassium and other essential minerals which help regulate fluid balance as well as stimulate urine production, so while the blood pressure lowering benefits are still attained, the body’s electrolyte balance is enhanced. Celery also contains active compounds called phthalides, which can help relax the muscles around arteries and allow those vessels to dilate. So, I juice 6 fresh celery stalks and other vegetables like carrots and beets every morning, and I drink this with a freeze-dried dandelion root supplement in capsule form along with my other healthy supplements to replace the potentially harmful drug-diuretic. For me, this is a far superior method of helping to lower blood pressure while improving, rather than harming, my overall electrolite and bodily function.
