Diabetes And Hypertension Kill 14M Yearly

(Washington Post) — Fourteen Million people die yearly from non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as obesity, diabetes, hypertensions, heart attacks and cancers in low and middle income countries.

This contributes to 30 percent of illnesses and deaths in the country and has reduced Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth by 5 percent.nKofi Adusei, Programme Manager of Regenerative Health and Nutrition (RHN), made these revelations at a two-day workshop organized by the Ministry of Health (MOH) for the markets preachers and drug sellers at the Greater Accra Metropolis.

He said the workshop was aimed at educating the preachers and sellers on how they can ensure that traders live in clean environments.

Addressing the trainees, Mr. Adusei said a free medical screening that was conducted by the ministry in May this year for 365 market traders showed that 1.33 percent had high blood pressure, 40.3 percent were overweight and 9.9 percent had high sugar levels in their bodies. “It is because the preachers are always available at the market that is why we are entrusting this task into their hands, knowing very well that they can deliver,” he added.

According to him, the preachers speak local languages, which the women understand, adding that they believed that some of them had already been preaching about diseases and its preventions.
