Q: I have just noticed my blood sugar went up to 244. I quit eating sweets and carbs which have helped lower it under 120. I am 75. Is this part of aging? Or do I need to see a doctor. Thanks.
A: You should see a doctor. A blood sugar level of 244 is high. You may have diabetes. To learn more about diabetes that starts late in life go to diabetes.org.

Regarding high glucose levels – mine varies quite a bit over the day/nite. I take 2grams of metformin and 20 units of Humelin N insulin daily. Despite this my glucose level is generally 140 in the morning and 200 plus in the evening (taken and recorded daily). My A1c ranges from 6.8 to 7.2 on a quarterly basis. I am 76, have hypertension, cardiac arrythmias/a fib and high cholesterol (200 plus)- all while under a doctor’s “care”…..I am always facing the reality of sudden death, but have lived with it for so long that I am used to it. I believe daily exercise and a prudent diet are the two best diabete’s glucose controllers…
