Q: How important is L-arginine in lowering blood pressure. Is it safe to take it with 40 mg.of Lisinopril? Many thanks. Have used the RESPeRATE for two years and love it!
A: According to the National Institutes of Health, there is not enough medical data to determine if L-arginine helps lower blood pressure. L-arginine is felt to be safe for short term use. The concern with taking L-arginine with Lisinopril or other high blood pressure drugs is about an unpredictable response. Your blood pressure may suddenly go too low. Lots of studies have been conducted relating to the efficacy of alpha lipoic acid in relation to peripheral neuropathy. I have found up to 600 mg/day is OK. Google ALA for info relating to studies conducted.
If you have problems with “fever blisters” or herpes virus be careful using arginine. It aggravates the virus and can cause outbreaks.
I tried L-arginine a few years ago and it didn’t help with my BP. I tried garlic and it upset my stomach and didn’t lower my BP. The only thing that worked and got me off half the drugs for BP was exercise, lost weight, ate more vegestables and fruit especially celery, low sodium tomato juice, dark chocolate, walnuts, less beef and pork, more fish This works!
Thank you so much for discussing the many facets of HPB. I’ve had very good results with combining many recommended measures, including the arginine supplement. Without it, I rarely achieved readings in the “normal” range, even with multiple medications.
I take L-ArgininewithL-Ornithine 2000mg a day-no side affects and my blood pressure stays about 130/68. I exercise and walk 3 miles aday. Very satisfied.

I took L-Arginine with L-Ornithine and L-Critulline. In comination with my HB Meds, and a little more activity in my life, I went from 168/110 to 120/80.
I read your atricles, and with all the info, I still read of most people having HBP….so, what about something that works that is not a drug.
thanks, Mr. V
Did anyone note the interest discrepancy in these two statements from above:
there is not enough medical data to determine if L-arginine helps lower blood pressure.
The concern with taking L-arginine with Lisinopril or other high blood pressure drugs is about an unpredictable response. Your blood pressure may suddenly go too low.
What they are really saying is that no one can make as much money by selling l-Arginine as they can sell prescription drugs.
Not all drugs work for everyone. And most prescription drugs have nasty side effects.
