There are exceptions to the rate at which Metoprolol is metabolized. The primary route of metabolism is via the liver enzyme CYP2D6. But a good percentage of the population are CYP2D6 slow or non-metabolizers. For these people, dangerous levels can accumulate. So if someone is asking this question, they may have a problem with this (and many other) medications.
