Q: Could someone explain this? Laying 120/80, sitting 140/100, standing 160/115? I am on my 3rd BP medicine now and the only thing its doing is slowing my heart rate down. What causes this much difference? Thanks
A: The heart is a pump. Blood needs to get to your brain. This is easiest when you are lying down and hardest when you are standing up. It takes the most pressure to move blood to your head in the full upright position.
Your answer seems to make sense, but why is it that blood pressure is usually higher in the morning when you get up. Lying down all night should have made it lower.
Perhaps because your blood has a tendency to thicken while you are asleep. Try taking a baby aspirin just before bedtime to help it thin the blood and reduce blood pressure. Works for me…
Blood pressure is usually highest in the morning because, as part of the waking up process, the hormonal system sends out a surge of hormones. These stimulate us, wake us up, and get us going in the morning. BP rises as part of that process.
I’m just the opposite. Standing up drops my BP by up to 20 points. I think they call this Orthostatic Hypotension. Maybe the Beta Blocker I take has soem effect on this also, not sure.
Some blood pressure meds will drive your pressure up instead of down.. all medications don’t work for all people… be careful taking more then one Med… the Drs could be giving you beta blockers,( for people with a high RENIN count) Ace inhibitors also for people with high renin count)Or calcium chanel blockers for people with low renin count.. If they give you the wrong meds it will make your B.P rise.. Ask to have your renin checked to see where you stand…the Drs are going to have to do this before writing prescripitions for high blood pressure.. P.S.. Renin is a hormon that is secreted by your kidneys
I am on all the following for high blood pressure:
Amlodipine (Calcium Channel Blocker),5mg,x2 daily
Hydrochlorothiazide (diuretic),12.5mg,x2 daily
Losartan (ARB),50mg,x2 daily
Metoprolol (Beta Blocker),50mg,x2 daily
Quinapril (ACE Inhibitor),40mg,x2 daily
I have discussed all these meds with my cardiologist and PCP and they say they are all necessary, but I’m not sure I believe it. I exercise vigorously daily (walk/sprint 4 miles, resistance training and stretching), have very low LDL (HDLs are also low, but the ratio is fine). According to a couple web sites some of the drugs I am on should normally NOT be taken together. My average BP is 128/70 (with all these meds).
From what you are saying above, it sounds like a couple of the drugs I am on my have opposite effects.
I read that amlodipine and a beta blocker should not be used together. Does anyone have info about this combination?
Bewildering and makes one nuts.
There are so many conflicting information as everybody is different!! And Doctors do not always know the right thing. When cornered, they say,”well, trial and error!” The real problem is that we do not consume really good and undiluted foods. They are all contaminated with various drugs to make them look more appealing and satisfactory. They are full of pesticides and chemicals!! So there…lots of health problems.!!
when is d best position to take bp check. my bp is ok when i lied down but outrageous when i sit but i am fine
