Q: I am a 33 year old male taking 10MG of lisinopril for HBP. I maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. My HBP is most likely a result of stress/anxiety. If i have my blood pressure under control with medication, diet, exercise and through stress reduction methods is my life expectancy the same as an individual not on HBP medication?
A: By keeping your blood pressure in control, you are lowering the risk of damage being down to your organs by the disease. You still have that particular risk factor. You do not have the risk factors of not exercising, eating poorly, and being overweight. Life expectancy is based on more than one risk factor. Your life expectancy is slightly lower than it would be if you did not have high blood pressure but higher than it would be if your blood pressure was not controlled. The insurance company Northwest Mutual has a fun game that will predict your life expectancy based on well known risk factors. To play go to this page on the Northwestern Mutual site.
Avoiding the real answer. Drugs do not increase life expectancy for HBP, but exercise is. Yes, those who have naturally normal BP have higher life expectancy than those with high. However, artificially lowering BP with drugs do not increase life expectancy (prove me wrong, Dr!). One big study (not published yet), discovered than people with high BP who exercise increase their life expectancy compare to those who did not. I’m not sure I fully agree with this statement. BP meds have kept my BP normal for years. Without them I may not have been alive due to heart disease.
I think the real answer to this question is to remove the primary cause of hypertension which is atherosclerosis. BP meds do not do this, they treat symptoms. Aggressive nutirional intervention will gradually remove the root cause. I’ve changed to a strict diet and have watched my BP meds gradually be discontinued. The Western diet is the root cause of atherosclerosis. Your life expectancy can be maximized if you remove the root causes of these conditions and heal the arteries.
May I ask what diet you are following that heals the arteries and loweres BP?
A plant based diet is proven to reduce chronic western diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer by neutralizing free radicals in the body which are the building blocks to disease. A plant focused diet contains a high nutrient content along with antioxidents. This type of diet naturally lowers BP by allowing the arteries to heal themselves from the ravages of the Western diet. It allows the blood vessel lining to produce more nitric oxide which causes the arteries to vasodilate thereby lowering BP.
what exactly is plant based diet?
Fruits, vegatables, whole grains. No animal protein, oil or dairy.
this sort of diet is being promoted for other conditions too. I have heard of raw plant plant diets, along with a source of the nutrients provided by fruits.
I would agree on the benefits of a plant based diet. I’ve read several articles indicating that in certain parts of the non-Western world Hypertension is almost non-existant, so this would definitely imply diet is a cause.
I had high blood preasure it was stress from work. I changed job and my HBP went down. I gave up caffine smoking drinking and started a daily walk about a mile or two my BP is down to around 115/75. I have always eaten healtyish but I do eat frys, well Oven cooked so less fat. I believe the biggest cause in my case was stress from work but giving up the others did help a lot to bring it right down. I knew I was not helping myself by by smoking drinking and not doing a small bit of exercise.Im 43 my dad died of heart disease at 56 but he liked a beer.
Sounds like you are on the right track. I just lost a good friend from a heart attack at age 54. He was a heavy smoker. I agree caffeine raises BP too. I was a heavy caffeine drinker too and quit cold turkey after I found my BP too high. Also walk everyday now too. Exercise does help but I think diet is key. Not sure about if work stress was affecting me but I think it was. That’s a tough one to do much about. Maybe this Resperate device helps, I’m not sure. I think a drink or two every so often is fine as long as it’s in moderation.
Thanks Nick, sorry to hear about your friend
my mother smoked very heavly she died of lung cancer she was 64 her heart was very strong but she had a manual job which I believe lead to that. Moderation is not really me Im all or nothing.I have a few drinks because it helps me sleep and before long you find it hard to sleep without it. The smokes are a hard one to keep away from as its a 24/7 habbit.
WE AREWHAT WE EAT always brings to mind Linda mc cartney< if only that was the whole answer but it does help.
colm, Thanks for the tip on moderation. You just convinced me to quit drinking too. I never smoked but the drinking was a hard habit to break. So now I’m not drinking (coffee or alcohol) and exercising. I’d rather stay healthy and get my BP down in a healthy range. I don’t want to resort to pills, that’s just not my thing. I changed my diet and eliminated sodium and now think I’m going to give up meat too.
‘WE ARE WHAT WE EAT’ is an oft-quoted statement and which is true to the core ! But having said that, there is yet another MAJOR factor into operation which many are sceptical about !
Man is a product of genetics and environment ! Indeed the factor of longevity of life is also based with a genetic component !
But the most important determinant factor is ‘karma’ ! And this is decided by the one above and written or engraved on our palms as the ‘LIFE LINE’ ! Why did JFK die so early and who helped him win the presidential elections ? Why did Adolf Hitler die a sudden death and what happened to the rest of the Hitlers in Germany ? Today, there is not a single living Hitler in Germany ! How long was the ‘life line’ of Princess Diana and what did her horoscope predict ? So, besides diet, there is this other factor of ‘karma’ !
Before I retired, I had an opportunity to see a young lady of only 20 years of age diagnosed with a cancerous breast lump and posted for a mastectomy operation ! The moment I introduced myself as the one who would anaesthetize her on the following day for the operation, she released all her pent up emotions and was sobbing over my shoulders and screaming, “Why me ? What wrong have I done in my life to deserve this ?” The only answer I gave was, ” Young lady ! This is not your life and the one that I am living is not mine either ! It belongs to Him, Who has very kindly loaned it to us on the condition that He will take it back whenever it pleases Him !”
My mother refused to take medicine for her high blood presssure. She refused to go to a doctor except when pregnant and for delivery of each of her five children. She died at 91 having outlived in years all her 9 brothers and sisters and her 10 double first cousins. She was the last one alive. I take the medicine. Would she have lived longer if she had taken the medicine. Will I?
Though, our lives are controlled by several factors: ourselves and what are beyond us. It is important we live right, eat right foods as prescribed by the experts and involve ourselve in exercise. I was once diagnosed of high blood pressure, not was I onl scared, I lost hope of recovery. Because of little information I had at hand, I thought death has come to take over. Today, I thank God. My health has greatly improved. How did it happen? I put my trust in God and through the prayer of faith, I got my healing. Also, I changed my lifestyles to maintain my health. I eat good foods, exercise and take adequate rest. Beside all these, I learn to cast my worries to God. And to the glory of God, I am enjoying a good heath today.
Dk. Oprah have tried every diet the best money can buy, look at her now.People spend $20 billion per year on vimtains and supplements.a0 According to Everyday Health, here’s an article that will tell you why . . . those PRODUCTS by any other name do NOT WORK.a0 It is false advertisements. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t have to approve supplements — no agency in the United States does. So it’s up to consumers to bring health concerns to light. “It’s important to understand the difference between over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements,” say Pieter Cohen, MD, an internist at Cambridge Health Alliance and instructor at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Mass. The FDA gets involved only after the fact, if the supplement later appears to be causing harm. By that time, the supplement may already have harmed many consumers who used it. “The burden of proof is on the FDA to determine [a supplement] is dangerous and remove it from the market,” Cohen says. Consumer complaints are the primary trigger for investigations. One recent investigation of the dietary weight-loss supplement ephedra resulted in it being banned for sale in the United States. We are made in the likeness and image of the Lord God almighty. He is the creator of all things in the universe and his grace is always sufficient for us. Neither Christ nor any of his disciples ever suffered blood pressure,Diabetes, cholesterol etc.His desire for mankind is that we prosper in all things which includes good health. Through faith all things are possible to them that believe. Health impediments is not his desire for us but that of the devour. Therefore, let us all stand in agreement and speak a word of faith concerning our situation today and stop searching for solutions to our problems by looking to mankind.
The solutions to all of our problems rest with him. The deep secrets of the earth is his. He has said that he is the God of all flesh and there is nothing too difficult for him. Let us remember that in our infinite wisdom, we are nothing but fools in the sight of God.
