Q: I havea rare type of blood pressure called NMH (neurally mediated hypotension) which causes my blood pressure to go high and then drop instantaneously to a low blood pressure–my heart specialist has me on a two combo pack of high blood pressure pills -80 mg to be exact but my naturapath tells me that 85% celery sed extract works and so does dandelion root tea and another home remedy is chamomile with lemon–do you agree that these are effective for blood pressure?
A: Neurally mediated hypotension, or low blood pressure as a result of the brain getting the wrong signal, can be difficult to treat. If you are doing well on your current medicine, no episodes of dizziness or fainting, you probably should stick with the recommendation of your cardiologist. This does not mean that natural treatments will not help, just that enough research has not been done to really know the cause of this disease or the most effective treatment.
I was rather sceptical of alternative treatments due to their lack of clinical trials to provide evidence of their true effectiveness. I therefore decided before taking a herbal supplement for lowering blood pressure that I would take my blood pressure readings 3 times a day for 3 months, then try the product for 3 months and then take my readings again for 3 months 3 times a day, and compare the results. I found Hawthorn supplements worked very well for me, and I am happy to use them on the basis of my own experience. Working in the Pharma industry I am concious of adding the proviso that I am not a Doctor and can not make recommendations to you. However, this is a product you could consider using along side any existing treatments, but do not reduce or stop any prescribed medication without discussing and agreeing with your doctor first. It is essential that your doctor is aware of any supplements you take, as they are medicines and they can or do interact with prescribed pharmaceutical products.
Richard which form of hawthorn supplement do you take (tincture/pill etc)? I also only use natural alternatives for hbp and always interested in what has worked for other people. thanks
I have been taking diuretics to reduce my blood pressure, it usually works for a while and then doesn’t work for a while. I started eating watermelon and it helps some, but I was wanderning what kind of suplement you take.
B6 (50mg.) & magnesium (500mg.), both daily having been very effective in lowing my BP. I cannot tolerate the medications.
The original question asked has not been answered. Too bad! I really don’t understand the way questions are skirted for some answer that everybody knows already ;-( When I asked a question about low pulse while practicing the breathing exercises, the reply was not even about pulse. What’s the problem with answering the questions–if you don’t know, say you don’t know, but a little research would help!
What natural remedies do you find works for high blood pressure.
Hello Richard. Please share what you know. I am desperate to get off of Norvasc. My feet and legs swell so much that it is difficult to walk or wear my shoes. I have reactions to most bp meds.
Everyone reacts differently. It’s best to consult with a Naturopathic doctor to discuss your particular situation. They are of tremendous help in prescribing the right supplements that work. Check the website naturopathic.org to locate a doctor.
Hawthorn tincture is very effective for hbp. If you are taking meds be sure not to take it the same time. It increases the effect of your meds and your bp could drop below normal. If you take hawthorn for hbp you should also take dandelion tincture for fluid retention. Monitor your bp regularly and inform your doctor of your actions so he or she can also monitor you closer.
Hawthorne is highly touted for it’s blood pressure lowering effects. It is recommended by Dr. Stephen Sinatra in his book entitled “Lower your blood pressure in 8 weeks” Among some others recommended were CoQ10, Fish Oil, Magnesium, Garlic and L-Arginine. Personally I had better success with supplements than I did with prescription meds. Anything with Terminalia Arjuna seemed to worked well for me. I was able to wean myself off meds with these in addtion to a plant based diet. I still take Fish Oil, CoQ10, Magnesium and Vitamins C/D (1000mg each) and my BP runs around 120/65.
do wish someone could could tell me something that would lower my blood pressure … i want to live but i don’t want to take pill.. please help GOD bless.
Be very, very careful when using natural products to lower blood pressure, especially if you are coming off your BP drug. Everything, natural or drug has a side effect. One side effect you have to watch out for is thining blood over time and the interaction the natural might have with prescription drugs. Some times a natural supplyment may work to lower blood pressure for a while and then stop working. The big Pharms won’t do the research because there is no money in it for them. The health books and natural healing books I studied contradict concerning natural supplements . One book says U are wasting your money on COQ10 because your body can’t absorb COQ. Another book says although garlic is healthy for your heart it does nothing for blood pressure. ????
There may be side effects with natural supplements, but thinning of the blood is not something you will feel versus the typical effects of drugs that can be so annoying and even dangerous in some cases. As for CoQ10, the body not does not readily produce this powerful antioxident after age 40, so it needs to obtained from food or supplements, however food doesn’t provide nearly the amount the body requires. They are even now saying that lack of CoQ10 might be one of the causes of hypertension and heart disease. It supposedly is a crtical antioxident. It’s best to go with one that is hydrosoluble in Qgel form for maximum absorption.
In this case supplements are likely to miss doing what you need so I agree with the doctors answer.
Celery seed extract might be helpful for inflammation or joint pain but I’ve not heard it helpful for blood pressure.
I take hawthorn as is has other heart positive effects and in hopes my blood pressure will go up less but in me it doesn’t seem to have much effect in lowering blood pressure.
Chamomile tea does help some people relax and might help people with stress driven high blood pressure.
And dandelion is a mild diuretic so might lower blood pressure a bit.
But the reason I agree with the doctor is you have something that is NOT run of the mill high blood pressure and what doctors have found IS helpful is likely your best shot. I’d stick with it in your shoes!
Maybe exercise might help exert a normalizing effect. So you might ask your doctor if regular walking or more vigorous exercise is safe or research shows any such effect.
stay off of sugar as much as possible -a good first step
Someone mentioned this>> (Celery seed extract might be helpful for inflammation or joint pain but I’ve not heard it helpful for blood pressure.)
Celery seed along with other foods like Parsley and celery stalks, watermelon help the body get rid of water so they in fact become a diuretic which reduces water retention and high blood pressure, Magnesium should always be a part of daily diet, if not then take Magnesium supplements, as well as a natural calcium food ( not a fan of calcium supplements, calcium supplements become a chalky build up that will show up in the body as calcium deposits) magnesium supplements dont build up and are needed very much so.
My mum started some supplements recently and it raelly helped her BP come down . If you ask me supplements are great
I HAVE HBP AND I AM ON MEDS.IT DOES NOT HELP.CAN SOME ONE GIVE ME SOME IDEAS.
Plant based diet- no animal protein, dairy, sodium or oils. Combine with Fish Oil, CoQ10, Magnesium. Consult a naturopathic doctor to assist with supplementation. I have had outstanding results. Also get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. Walking is perfect.
