(NY Daily News) — Though most of us may find it quite embarrassing in case we were caught breaking wind, a new study has in fact suggested flatulence could help patients with high blood pressure.
Scientists at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland, US, have found that hydrogen sulphide in flatus – informally known as a fart – is also produced by an enzyme in blood vessels where it relaxes them and lowers blood pressure, The Sun reported.
Hydrogen sulphide — a toxic gas generated by bacteria living in the human gut — has been shown to control blood pressure in mice. Those with higher levels of the gas had lower blood pressure than rodents with less.
Researchers at a Chinese university in Nanjing are trying to work out whether this could be used to create a treatment for people suffering from high blood pressure.
That’s good news
That’s obviously the reason why I am affected “in that way” after even a slight exertion such as climbing the stairs.
So true! I went on a bean and broccoli diet for about 2 weeks- I knew this was a deadly combination for gas, and as expected, I was terribly gassed up by the third day, but I noticed that through the discomfort of so much gas and bloating, my blood pressure took a really good dip- from 129/85 to 107/65 and remained low (with no symptom of low blood pressure) for a pretty long time- I couldn’t stand the pressure and bloating anymore so I went back to my normal diet.. I just thought it interesting that there’s a scientific link between gas and BP..who knew
It boggles the mind to imagine what this treatment would be like!
“The effective dosage could prove difficult to establish due to the difference in size between humans and mice.”
ahem…
