(by Frank) — I have been living with high blood pressure for a number of years. I am 78 years old. I ran into Dr. Julian Whitaker through a flyer that I received in the mail. In that flyer, I found out that celery(3-n butyl pathelide)would help lower your blood pressure.
Dr. Whitaker is a graduate of Emory Medical school. Also, my cardiologist is a graduate of Emory Medical School. From time to time, I would talk to my cardiologist about taking natural things for my blood pressure. The only thing he recommended was garlic I would mention to him about celery, but he never said a thing about it yet both Doctors were graduates of Emory Medical School.
I got the feeling that he wanted me to take medication that had side effects. One day, I had a quite high blood pressure problem (178/98) and decided to go buy some celery at the farmer’s market and try it. I bought a couple of bunches and ate one whole bunch of celery. After eating one whole bunch of celery, I took my blood pressure, and it was 112/60. I was telling a CVS pharmacy technician about it, and she told me that her grandmother whom she lived with knew about celery and blood pressure along time ago.
Celery is a natural diuretic. Celery is among the many natural diuretics that we have discussed on the natural alteratives blog.
Good on ya for stearing away from the toxic drugs, and finding a natural therapy that worked for you!
All the best!
Thank you for your suggestion. I agree with you. Eating celery is good to lower the pressure. In addtion of the celery, the watermelon is another good dieuretic that helps to lower the pressure.
Thanks, headed to the Market ASAP,
Celery on my mind !!
Thanks, Le
Frank,
The correct spelling is phthalide, not pathelide. Otherwise you’re on the right track. But, you don’t have to eat all that celery. Just buy celery seed extract in capsules or tablets, standardized to 85% 3-n-B. One of its actions in lowering blood pressure is to relax blood vessels. It also appears to have positive effects on joint pain and cholesterol levels.

“3nB is a compound that is unique to celery and is responsible for the characteristic flavor and odor of celery. 3nb was discovered as the active component of celery in response to investigations by researchers seeking to explain some of the medicinal effects of celery including the lowering of blood pressure and the relief of arthritis. 3nB first drew significant scientific attention when researchers at the University of Chicago Medical Center identified it as the factor in celery responsible for the blood pressure lowering effect of celery.1 The research was prompted by one of the researcher’s father, who after eating a quarter-pound of celery every day for one week observed his blood pressure dropped from 158 over 96 to a normal reading of 118 over 82. Subsequent animal studies found that a very small amount of 3nB lowered blood pressure by 12 to 14% and also lowered cholesterol by about 7%.”

I had blood pressure for about three years now, thanks very much for sharing the information obout celery and its contribution to lower blood pressure Im starting to use it together with carrots will that be alright. How long will I continue to eat celery to eat celery to clear my blood pressure?
Since Celery is a natural diuretic, it should not be eaten if you have Gout. Also, it is the ONLY veg. containing salt. Salt is not good for Congestive Heart Failure and Blood Pressure. So all of this surprises me.
you will need to eat 10 lbs of celery a day for the salt in it to harm you! Let’s stop exaggerating!
Agreed. And celery is NOT salt, it’s natural sodium which a very different from processed salt. It’s good for your stomach also, which needs sodium for digestion.
Thanks for the reminder of celery!!!
Thanks for the reminder of celery!! I used to eat it weekly – heading to the farmers market. Best regards
Good morning, I have been seeing a 5 generation acupuncturist for the last couple of years. I have learned from him re: high blood pressure that not only does celery work (4 stalks a day), but also cucumber, cilantro and green apples. That has been my daily medicine and it works! Gratefully, Catherine
I love cucumbers! How many green apples and cucumbers do you recommend?
On Tropol XL50 for a number of years. Given this drug to slow down heart rate. If I use Resperate with this drug, am I in danger of bringing down the heart rate too much?
Good question, because I am on it also and you cannot abruptly stop this medication. I would be interested in knowing the answer as well.
I had triclycerides at 621, changed diet a little but included celery one to two meals a day and began some light exercising, three months latter triclycerides were 221, liver enzymes back in balance, Hdl better, Ldl lower. Cholesterol better. Doctor was thinking of putting me on Cholesterol drugs, I didn’t want that, still need my Blood pressure meds, but trying to find a way to get rid of that two.
how many stalks a day should one consume?
I read four stalks a day was good. However, I have taken two and it works for me. I usually juice mine because I have a hard time eating that much of something I really don’t like. Beets also works for me. Two cups of beet juice a day. One earlier in the day and one later. Add cucumber and an apple along with the above items in a juicer and you have a dynamic drink to lower your pressure. I know it may not work for everyone but it works for me.
celery. How much?
I will try it
celery seeds works also. You can make a tea from the seed or swallow a teaspoon full.Does not taste great but it works
But isn’t celery high in sodium
Is celery high in sodium and is it dangerous if your BP isn’t under control?
Compared to processed foods, the sodium content is minimal. It’s high in Potassium which makes it ideal for blood pressure lowering. Keep in mind only 40% of people are sodium sensitive.
Yes– Celery is a great diuretic and works great for blood pressure.
I haven’t tried celery but it’s worth a try. I had high blood pressure for several years and tried many natural alternatives. The one that really made a difference to lower my pressure is organic powder lecithin. I mix 1/2 teaspoon in organic cranberry juice with water everyday. My pressure is now 120/78 avg I used to run 140-145/90-95. You must monitor you pressure and heart rate as it can fall to low. My reasting is around 55-60 but at first I took 1 Teaspoon and sometimes it fell below 50. I refused to go on meds and I’m happy I did.
thanks for the tip on organic powder lecithin where do i get it from
Is there a certain # stalk of celery you have to eat per day for it to be effective?
2-3 stalks a day should probably be enough – i wouldn’t eat a whole bunch every day
The researcher who published a study on the celery efficacy tested the idea on himself by consuming 4 celery stalks a day. The celery MUST be organic. Non organic celery contains powerful toxins which may nullify its beneficial effect on blood pressure. The celery is diuretic to some degree but it also relaxes blood vessels hence its excellent benefits. And no side effects!
re: both docs having graduated from Emory – one keeps learning after the formal schooling –
I’m going to try it. I hate celery can I put peanut butter on it and it still work?
Thanks.
Your response made me smile! The ‘problem’ with peanut butter is that it is high in fat and therefore may cancel out the effects of the celery, i.e. may raise cholesterol.
Nut butters are ok in limited amounts if you can maintain a total cholesterol <150 a level which puts one at low risk for heart attack and stroke. Walnuts are preferred due to Omega-3 ALA. No nuts for those with known heart disease.
Does celery juice work as well? I have been juicing and have been mixing beet juice and celery juice together. I would like nothing better than to get off my diuretic med.
Yes celery juice works, use the whole stalk don’t cut anything off and grind it up, you can also throw a couple of apples in seeds and all.The Chinese have used celery for centuries for high blood pressure.
I juice celery (with carrots, 1 apple and 1 peeled lime. Tastes wonderful and this with breathing exercises through out the day has brought my pressure down.
I will give this a try….by the way is celery sprayed with poison….should I purchase organic celery?
We have been purchasing only organic celery for about the past year and a half, and find that the flavor is distinctly different. It tends to taste milder and somewhat sweeter. I can only attribute this to a lack of toxins and “junk” applied to a very fiberous and water-filled plant. With conventionally grown celery, as with corn incidentally, we can smell the stuff that has been applied.
Organic celery is easy to find. Organic corn on the cob, not so much. We don’t eat the conventional corn any longer because the smell and taste of it is really repugnant once you’ve tasted organically grown. Then, you know (or in our case remember) what fresh corn on the cob is supposed to taste like! : ,)
I take my celery stalks now and blend them into a fine texture, then add 8 oz. of Lo-Sodium V-8 juice and blend on high speed until it breaks down a bit more. It’s a thick pulpy juice; but gets in the V-8 and is a good way to change it up. I just add 1/4 cup of organic unsweetened cran juice to each of the four bottles of water I drink throughout the day (I add stevia to it to sweeten it a bit) to get that in.
Everyone has to find their own way. These work for me.
I eat four to five pieces as I am walking for a half hour and it gets me right down there in those low numbers,i.e. 112-115/78/80. No question about it, it works. You just have to do it veryday–just like med’s!
Wow that’s a great low! What was your reading before you started this drink & walking!
Just as an additional note to my above post….I have been able to stop my BP med that I had been on since 2003. I juice those foods that are known to be BP pressure reducing and I also try to remember slow, stomach breathing a couple of times a day. My BP is now lower than it was on the medication which varied from about 132/74 to 198/94. It is almost always around the 110/67 area. Due to physical health issues, I seldom get in exercise but I do watch what I eat concentrating on God-made foods. My treat for the day is dark chocolate. I hope you find the right combination for you. It does take time and dedication to find the answers that are uniquely right for you. Don’t give !!
Just curious as to what types of foods you juice to get those fantastic results. That is outstanding!
Congrats to you! How long did it take you to wean off of your meds?
I will try it and keep tabs on my pressure daily
Doesn’t celery leave a burning sensation in the mouth or stomach after eating about two to three stalks raw.
I know what you’re talking about: but I’ve not experienced it with organic celery.
I am a well respected physician in my community. I have hypertension (under control)and give talks all the time to African Americans about health issues. Are their any clinical trails that someone can tell me about before I suggest to my patients as well as others about celery. I am interested and want to learn about this before I recommend it to my patients.
Dear Dr. Thaddeus John Bell MD
You, Sir, have made my day. Just seeing a medical doctor interested in the validity of healing with herbs and natural remedies has lifted my spirit. Your grandmother must of had some Cherokee blood running in her veins.
For two years I have been on a variety of medicine for high blood pressure. For the past year, I have been trying to get off of them. It was always a new pill, less of this one, more of that one, change this one all together or try this new one. It was trial and error anyway. I started listening to my body and reading everything I could get my hands on about blood pressure. As long as I was on the medicine, I was so lethargic, coughed, had headaches and no energy at all. I could not exercise, so I started with diet. Organic for the most part. Lots of fresh vegetables raw and steamed. In six months, my doctor was agreeable to cut the medicine dose in half, 3 months later, half of that amount again. When I got to the these final 3 months I just could not stabilize an acceptable BP on a continuous basis. That is about when I started following (D. Carestia’s article) on this website. I have much gratitude for this man and I have not officially told him yet, although I know he will see this note, on this website. I have taken each and every piece of information shared by him and his following (some were very impatient readers – wanting a fast fix) and tried it for myself. I have kept copious records of what I used, how it worked, how well it worked, how long it took to work, or if it did NOT work FOR ME. I put that in caps because I am of the belief that everyone has to do this for themselves. They have to love themselves enough to take the time and find out their ‘medicines’. The pharmaceutical companies are NOT going to do the studies for us; and we all know why. I am of the belief that some of the pharmaceutical industry may exemplify the difference in Capitalism and Greed. Sometimes it is a fine line with Stockholders expecting higher profits.
My heritage is Native American and some of our health problems are similar to those of the African American; i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, MS, autoimmune, Kidney failure, etc. I am writing some of my experiences, the least of which was my last bout with hypertensive rebound when going off of the medicine named Clondine. That was a dusie, as my grandma would say. But, fresh garlic (5 blubs, minced, mixed in butter and spread on toast), kept me from going to the ER at the local hospital and letting them UNDO all that I had accomplished in a whole year; for I knew they would put me on intravenous medications to lower the blood pressure and I would be back on the merry-go-round. I ate the toast and then, I laid down on the couch and listened to my body, slowed my breathing, kept my BP monitor in place and prayed to my Creator. I have had a few other tough days, but that one was the worst. REBOUND is real and so is prayer. I am off of the medicine as of 3 weeks ago. I am holding 130/80 to 140/90 pretty consistently. I am not through yet. I looking to buy a bike and start riding. I finally have enough energy to walk some even with some physical limitations. So it is a journey.
Dr. Bell, I think the folks in Charleston, SC must be pretty lucky to have you asking all the right questions. I send you my blessings. We need more medical doctors out there like you. Kindest regards. Kathleen
Hello, Dr. B!
I just googled: Celery to lower blood pressure, studies of
Found: Can celery lower your blood pressure?: Nutrition Data…
Website: http://www.self.com/…/can-celery-lowe.html
From: Sept. 6, 2007 – Can celery lower your blood pressure? …Stay up-to-date with the latest research…
There are several articles that appeared under the Google inquiry Stated above; some are testimonials and some are more scientifically based.
Hope this is of assistance in steering you in the right direction.
I am in the process of trying to find a doctor who practices functional medicine and
integrated medicine; but they are few and far between in Michigan, and their patient loads are huge. Just not enough forward-thinking physicians yet, although there are a few.
You are “blessed to be a blessing” for all those you treat. I thank you on behalf of those whom you will bless. Your very rare and valuable awareness of alternative approaches to treating your patients makes you so much more than a doctor. You became a doctor by successfully going through med school. It takes so very much more than that to become a true healer, as you are doing.
Goodness and blessings! K Gilmour

I’ve had blood pressure in high ranges for over a year, then I went to my doctor who wanted to prescribe 3 different medications. I said let me try another way first. I do have her to thank for motivating me to do something about it, especially losing weight. I think several factors have contributed to improved BP. I lost 25 pounds, exercise daily, reduced my work stress, practice with the Resperate and each night, I take 1 capsule of celery root extract found in the health food store. My last BP reading was 112/75 and has been around that for 3 months now. After losing the extra weight, the above regimen took me about 2 weeks to get my BP down and maintain. I believe the celery supplement helps.
I am very tired of having high blood pressure. I know for sure that the pills are killing me slowly. I need some natural suggestions please. I will sure to try the celery.
I am also tired of high BP but unlike everyone else mine is usually well over 190/200+ and I have tried every medication all of which had worse side effects that the BP itself. I have just bought myself a RESPERATE (last week) and have high hopes. Will also try all the other suggestions celery etc.
I am eager to hear if you get good results because I, too, am so tired of this battle and feeling like the pills are killing me. So, eveline, please give us an update on how it is working. Thanks
Evelyn and Terri, I felt the same way a year ago and now have a renewed sense of enthusiasm after starting a plant based diet. I can safely say you will CURE your hypertension on this diet not just treat it with side effect ridden drugs that ruin quality of life. Since starting the diet I haven’t looked back and am brimming with energy and run daily. I do check BP occasionally now at home and it’s always between 110-120/60-70
will buy some organic celery tomorrow, is it high in sodium
Celery does have some health benefits. It does contain sodium though, but 3 or 4 stalks a day shouldn’t be a problem. Obviously if you have high bp, you’ll need to restrict your salt intake Never use salt at the table. Remember that many canned items contain high amounts of sodium, particularly commercial soups. Avoid all salty snack foods. I have to admit that I add a pinch of salt now and then to certain foods I prepare, but only very sparingly and occasionally. On fish, I use freshly squeezed lemon juice. It really does give it a saltier, taste. I realize that I should just give up salt entirely, and I do fairly well, but I find it difficult to avoid completely. My bp has improved since I gave up the salty snack foods and canned items.
I went on a very low sodium diet for 3 months with absolutely no effect on my blood pressure.
When I asked my doctor why, he said only about 50% of the population is affected by sodium, but low sodium is recommended by doctors because they dont know who is affected and who isn’t.
So, worrying about the sodium in celery MAY not be necessary, but check your own response to salt first.
Your doc is correct in that only a percentage of people are sodium sensitive (I heard as low as 40%) I happen to be one who is not sodium sensitive, however the latest research seems to indicate hypertension may be strongly linked to insulin resistance so I have been paying close attention to sugar. Avoid white flours, rices etc. basically anything with a high glycemic index. An apple or orange is fine as the sugar binds to the fiber. Stay with whole grains also.
Some say celery does lower BP but I saw no drop when I tested the theory. Probably because I was still consuming animal protein, dairy and oils. It wasn’t until I eliminated all of the above that my BP plummeted and I was able to get off meds. A vegan diet is the ticket.
I found that the 25mg dose of HCTZ I was on was not working all that well to control my BP. I started juicing 5 to 6 stalks of celery (add an apple for better taste) and it dropped my BP right down. Then I tried just the celery juice without the HCTZ, but that did not work.
The problem with juicing, is that it is time consuming. It takes about 1/2 hour for the cleaning, cutting, drinking, and cleaning up the juicer.
Right now I am on 50mg of HCTZ and have stopped juicing. But if I can find something to add to the celery to eliminate the HCTZ completely, then that half hour would be worth it.
I’ve tried a number of supplements (celery extract, cranberry juice, pomogranite juice, garlic) but none of them had the effect of celery juice. Next, I am going to try adding beet juice to the celery juice.
How is the rest of your diet? I’m sure the celery does help to some degree but the gains can be overridden by other aspects of your diet. I’d would limit the animal protein, dairy and oils and see what happens. Also be especially careful with sugar and sodium. Also, be sure to drink plenty of filtered water.
I have been eating celery but very little. I have been taking Metroprol and it affected me so I stopped. Will eat more celery and am watching my diet and exercise and feel much better and my pressure has come down,
The first post by Frank does not indicate whether he consumed celery later-on, on regular basis or it was his only first instance when he took it and blood pressure dropped to 110/60. We should not rely on one or two readings as it may be due to other reason as well. I have read and heard that celery is only good for bones.
ather
hi wish to enquire can i juice celery and drink it immediately is it ok and pls advise can i mix beetroot with celery and juice it and drink it daily pls advise cheers
i take ‘baby’ aspirin everday as well as PPI ( a stomache acid reducer) will juicing celery, beetroot etc interfere with meds ?
Has any one heard of using Fish Peptides for lower blood pressure? The nutritionist at my local heatlth food store highly recommened it for people trying to get of blood pressure meds, because it can be taken while tapering off the pp meds. Be sure you let your doctor know what you want to do first.
HOW DO YOU EAT IT RAW OR COOKED
My bp was 200/110 yesterday was told i should go on tabs
which ones yet i dont know but first i am going to try celery i do think it more healthy as i do not like taking pills thanks for all the info
I had the same issue a year ago and I can tell you what worked for me. I eliminated meat, dairy and all oils. My BP plummeted quickly. You should see a dramatic reduction in just a few weeks. To this day I stay with the diet which consists of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. My average BP is now 112/60 this past month.
Thanks for telling me about celery. I neewd to lower my cholesterol.
Great! Been searching for this info , thanks for posting, protein diet plan.
hi,everyone what about grapeseed extract combining it with hawthrone and garlic, hope they re safe.
Amilodipine (phonetic) Tiredness, Depression, Serious allergy, large red welts on legs and back, dizzy, listless….a feeling that life is not worth living if it is going to be lived in this fashion. I stopped without withdrawal and suffered the consequences and even after around 4 weeks am still have some side effects.
i am on 80mg tablet for bp control. may i use celery.
The magic in celery is the Potassium, but the same results can be achieved with copius amounts of other green (and non-green) vegetables too. Kale, Romaine lettuce, brussell sprouts etc.
Celery is great as well as this small, but full of benefits fruit called..Kiwi!!And not only for HBP,but many other ‘inconveniences’! Please google it!
PS…If you like salads, try celery , red cabbage(very full of antioxidants)and some brocoli(if you dont like it, use cauliflower),onions(if you like them), apple cider vinegar, some salt, little pepper/garlick powder and olive oil! Also, fresh cilantro or dill, if you like them! You will love it and its good for you! ADD CHICKEN, and make it ONLY meal that day, I lost 4 lbs in a week! I love just RED cabbage salad by itself, also! It tastes great!
