BP Meds & Painkillers = Kidney Problems

(netdoctor.co.uk) People who take multiple blood pressure drugs and common painkillers at the same time may face an increased risk of kidney problems, experts have warned.

Canadian researchers looked at data on more than 487,000 people who used blood pressure drugs between 1997 and 2008.

Medicines included angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and diuretics, with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Patients were tracked for nearly six years and the researchers observed that those taking one blood pressure drug with an NSAID had no increased risk of kidney damage.

However, those taking a diuretic alongside another type of blood pressure drug and an NSAID had a 31 per cent increased risk of kidney injury, with the threat being particularly high in the first 30 days of treatment.
