Q: Is the resting heart rate in women a determining factor in heart disease. Aside from exercise and good diet, what other methods help to lower the resting heart rate?
A: A high resting heart rate is a risk factor for heart disease in both sexes. Average resting heart rate is 70 beats per minute in men and 75 beats per minute in women. Ways to lower your heart rate include regular exercise, maintaining a normal weight, and controlling stress and anxiety. Keep in mind that all exercise isn’t the same. To help protect your heart, it is important to reach your target heart rate during exercise.
Here are a couple of links to websites that discuss target heart rates:
It’s a function of age, also……don’t ya think?!?
Yes, I believe age is also an important factor when considering a resting HR, but I believe the asker and the DR. were both speaking in terms of averages for an “adult” female and/or male.
The provided link specifically goes into further detail on that matter.
Exercise will easily solve this problem. Vigorous aerobic exercise will lower both resting HR and BP.
I looked at various web sites. It is interesting that the resting heart rate does not seem to change much with age. But the charts seem to stop at age 65. Not sure what that means!
