Q: Is there a correlation between statin drugs and elevated blood pressure? My pressure goes up when I take my cholesterol pills; however, when I stop taking the pills for a month, pressure is normal.
A: Any medication can cause any type of reaction in an individual. Blood pressure changes are a lesser known side effect of statin drugs. Because high cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease, you need to talk to your doctor about what you are experiencing. There are other medications and lifestyle modifications that can help you lower your cholesterol without elevating your blood pressure.
ininvestigating possible link of hard to control blood pressure spikes in my 96 year old father to statins (Lipitor, Pravachol). He takes Diovan, Clonidine & Dyazide for blood pressure control. During 2 months he did not take statins he did not have blood pressure spikes.
I have experienced the same. On blood pressure pills – started taking lovastatin for cholesterol. In the hours after taking the statin – my blood pressure would spike significantly. I have stopped taking the statin until I can talk to my doctor.
I have the same problem… Hospitalized for bp reading 200/120 after taking creator and zocor…. I don’t know why!!!
I read that some statins not only lowers your cholesterol production but perhaps your Coenzyme Q10 inwhich in some individuals this has caused blood pressure issues. Read this from a book called “The Blood Pressure Cure” by Robert Kowalski.
