A: Exercise. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety and is good for your heart. Most of us don’t make time in our lives for enough exercise. Shorts bursts of exercise scattered throughout the day are effective. Thinking it takes an hour long session to get results is wrong. Do what you can when you have some time. Ten minutes here and there can really make a difference. Learning to control your anxiety especially that is associated with a doctor visit can help with white coat syndrome. Deep breathing and meditation helps a lot to lower the blood pressure. When my blood pressure goes high, I do PRANAYAM (deep breathing technique), mine BP drops about 20 points.
I just read an article in Meridan Health about the importance of maintaining a normal blood pressure. It stated that high blood pressure may do more than harm your heart. Researchers are learning it may also damage your brain. A study in Neurology examined more than 30,000 people; those with higher diastolic blood pressure – the number on the bottom – were more likely to have problems with thinking, learning and memory. And they found that people with high blood pressure score lower on brain tests and having high blood pressure in midlife seems to increase the risk of developing dementia later. How might hypertension affect your mind? It reduces blood flow to the brain, so the brain receives fewer nutrients and less oxygen, which can cause damage over time. Brain tangles and plaque, found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease,also seem to form more often if you have high blood pressure.
Of course, many risk factors for dementia can’t be changed, but you can certainly work to control blood pressure. Eating a healthy, low-fat diet and watching your sodium intake helps. Also, it’s important to exercise regularly and to quit smoking, if you smoke.
As I’ve said before, we are in charge of own health. For me, I follow all the above recommendations AND I use the Resperate device to ensure that I maintain a nomal blood pressure.
