Q: I have a blood pressure reading of 140/90 and it varies daily on mornings but in the afternoon it reads 126/80 to 119/76. I am 55 years old and female. Is this good? And should I be concerned? I some times feel dizzy in the mornings.
A: A blood pressure reading of 140/90 is not normal. That is the cut off line where treatment is recommended. You should see your doctor. Make sure you are exercising regularly and are eating a healthy diet. Lifestyle changes could keep you off medication.
Some would kill to have their blood pressure at 140/90 in the morning with much lower readings the rest of the day.
As for whether it is normal? It used to be……
Are you scaling your readings against the barometric pressure of the atmosphere also? What you should be concerned with, is the curve that your pressure changes by. But the biggest factor is definitely salt.
Are you taking your pressure properly. Sitting in a chair with your feet on the ground, arm resting on table, at heart level with proper size cuff (too large or too small will affect reading), rest for a few minutes and then take 3 readings a few minutes apart and average the calculations. Keep a record and discuss with your physician.
PS Pressure readings are normally higher in the morning.
One reading does not indicate hypertention!!!
Good point, and the Mayo protocol was to throw the first reading out and average the last two.
160/90 was a passing grade for a cdl at one time; The lower normal keeps getting lower Possibly the drug manufactures?[ how low can we go]
Bingo!
The next move will be for Big Pharma and the AMA docs who make a killing with Big Pharma to get everyone on “prehypertension” drugs!
What is the medicine for hypertension that gets the best results and is most requested for patients with hypertension. I have had hypertension for many years and cannot get my pressure under control, although I have tried may prescription medications. Please help. Thank you. ET
