Q: I am a 70 year old male and am taking Lisinopril 20mg& atenolol25mg once daily. I have gone on a diet and exercise program [bike riding daily for 30-45 minutes]. My weight was 220lbs. at 5ft. 9in. I lost about 20lbs. My previous bp was in the 140/85 range. Now, I am getting readings of 110/70 and sometimes 98/65 and 96/ 65. Is this low range dangerous? Thank you for your advice.
A: You are doing all the right things. You can see you your body has responded to the weight loss and regular exercise. As long as you are not having symptoms of low blood pressure, such as dizziness or feeling faint, your blood pressure range is not dangerous. You may want to talk to your doctor about trying to lower your medication.
Thanx!!! I was having the low reading and saw my PC on
Tuesday and was told just what you gave for an answer:)Oh… i lost 23lbs also
Congratulations! You have discovered that hypertension can be controlled naturally without the use of toxic medications! All the best to you!
I am 76 year old female taking 320 mg diovan and 50 mg Metopropol. My blood press in late afternoon is around 98/55 – pulse 65 down to 55. I am light headed and unsteady when I am standing. What does low blood pressure do to the body–I know many people who have low blood pressure–they do not feel like doing anything at all. I sleep a lot. Pulse is under 55 early in morning.
Peggy I do not understand why you are taking those drug and making yourself ill. Are you in the hands of a competent doctor – doesn’t sound like it 🙁
You best be getting back to your doc with a record of bp over a few days and get those meds lower. Sounds like you need to taper off.
I Am on 5mg Lisinopril. Systolic ranges from 112 to 145
in 24 hour period, diastolic from 55-75. Pulse pressure
concerns me most, as it ranges from 60-75. Understand
anything over 60 is bad long range. Also, I understand
that the pulse pressure (systolic minus diastolic)is
the most important factor for those over 60 (I am 72).
Your advice is most appreciated!
Please confirm to me that Zestril when used for long will lead to skin reactions, ultacaria or so. Thanks.
Hi D.Stubblefield,
What I have been able to learn from numerous articles is that elevated pulse pressure is not dangerous when systolic pressure is below 120. The risk seems to disappear when systolic pressure is brought under prehypertension levels. I believe the articles were from The Lancet or some other British medical journals.
I am 70 years old also.5’10”. My idea weight is 175 down from 200. I was on Lisinprill,Carvedilo, and two calcium chanell blockers 180mg. The doctors had me over medicated . I stopped taking the Lisinopril, and the Carvedilo over time. I am now only taking 9o mg of Calcium channel blockers. Get off the drugs as fast as possible or experience long term side affects such as depression, insomia, loss of hearing,ED and more.Been there done that or should I say couldn’t do that.
To all of you who are under a regime of blood pressure lowering drugs and are 55 or older I recommend you to read the book “Malignant Medical Myths” by Joel Kauffman, PHD. It seems that the outdated medical saying that a normal systolic pressure being roughly equal to 100 plus your age is not so farfetched at all(as long as you are not obese, suffer diabetes or some other condition that causes high blood pressure besides the normal age related arteries stiffening).
I completed a 300km walk across a desert in Australia in June and met a 72-year old woman on that hike. She was a former nurse and said when she trained as a nurse that was what the students were told too and she is still following this advice. I don’t know how high her BP is, but from the way she talked it would apper that it was higher than 120/80.
Yes I am also under medication for BP. I take 1 tab daily (Biduret)Good to know that low BP is not dangerous. From last one yr. my reading is always below 100 systolic and between 60-70 diastolic. But sometimes my head feels heavy. What shud I do?

I am 38 years old and have been having high blood pressure since 2008 which fluctuates wildy and which was characterised by headaches. I was on 100mg of herbessor and 100mg of Losartan Pottasium. In 2010 April while I was on an overseas assigment, the headaches were back and my pressure started to fluctuate once again. The highest reading to date has been 200/110. The doctor ran various tests to no avail and finally he introduced me to a whole new set of drugs. 50mg of Atenol , Coveram (perindopril Arginine 5mg and Amlodipine 5mg) and Esidrex 12.5 (anti-hypertensive diuretic. My readings are in the region of 115/75 etc.
I am overweight and was wondering if get into to a strict excercise routine and diet will I be able to get off these drugs or if not reduce the dosage??
I would like to use the Resparate without drugs. Will it work for me?
I am 78 and I have been on Coversyl Plus (perindopril 4mg +
1.25mg Indapamide )and Novasc for pre highpertension for five years and my systolic reading still stood at 140 each time when consulting my physician. Each visit saw an increase in Novasc dosage. I asked for a change of medication
and Novasc was changed to Plendil (felodipine) 10mg morning and 5mg night.I know it is still a CCB but my avg systolic pressure hence reads 110-125.To prevent WHITE COAT SYN I take a total of over 200 random readings for 6 months and plotted these
in a graphic form to show my physician and he has now stopped adding CCB.I have always m aintaned that rushing to meet a medical appointment, doing a merry-go-round to find a car park and anxiously waiting ( sometimes up to an hour )to see the physician WILL cause WHITE COAT SYN.My random home-BP results were finally accepted and there was no further increase in medication.Besides I complete a Lipid Profile,Liver and Kidney Function tests for his reference, together with the result of a HbAlc test each time when I consult the physician once every 6 months. I have no problem with my Diastolic P.My BP has since been on an even keel.
This would be a good time to return to your physician who prescribed your hypertensive medications. They may have to be adjusted to suit your new and more healthy lifestyle. It would be helpful to your physician, if you brought along several days of blood pressure readings (ie: 2 to 3 a day). This will give your provider a better idea of what is happening. Readings in the office can be confusing secondary to anxiety and white coat syndrone.
