Q: I’m currently taking medication for high blood pressure. Since I was diagnosed with HBP I started noticing that my face would get real red when in a warm room. I also find myself hot and having to have a desk fan on at work all time. Is that normal, if so what can I do to control this uncomfortable situation?
A: Enough details were not given. Facial flushing is a possible side effect of some drugs that are used to treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Your symptoms could also be related to menopause or thyroid disease. You should discuss this with your doctor.
“Not enough details” kind of leaves the question begging, doesn’t it? It would have been better for the doctor to ask what details would allow her to give you a better answer, no? I am curious. Are you a man or a woman? Seems kind of important in determining whether menopause could be your problem? Perhaps instead it could be andropause? I don’t know the answer to your question, either, but I do know that my hpertension is temperature sensitive, and I am no longer on any medications. Without sounding too critical, yet being realistic at the same time, I suspect your doctor won’t know, either. The thing I found most valuable in ultimately controlling my blood pressure naturally was Google. It is amazing what people out there know, and don’t know, and what you can learn to help yourself by studying as much as you can find on these subjects. Good luck, and all the best!!
It has been a hot summer.Drink a glass of water before each meal if you need to loss any weight. And find a relaxing tape somewhere to do relaxing exercises a couple times a week.
Today I have to agree with D. Caresta, and you probably share these symptoms with many others who have given up complaining to their doctors, because their doctor does not know the answer and especially because there is not treatment for it as long as you take medication.
If you are a woman in your fifties just about everything can be, and will be, blamed on menopause.
If these symptoms started after you commenced the medication they are likely to be caused by the medication.
If it may be caused by thyroid disease, I wonder why this would not be treated first.
The reason people stop taking blood pressure medication and start self-treatment of some kind is because of these unpleasant side-effects. Most, if not all doctors ignore this. Pharmaceutical companies call these side effects as ‘mild’, although they have a very unpleasant impact on your quality of life.
In the mean time I would suggest to have a close look at your diet. Eliminate salt, fat, fast-food, drink enough water, lose weight if you are overweight, and do moderate exercise if you are fit enough to do so.
I even would suggest to start looking into a vegetarian or vegan diet. I.e. find a good dietician who can help you with this.
High blood pressure builds up over time and if it is not malignant now, you may have time to assist in reducing it by starting a healthy diet. (DASH-diet, or completely vegan).
Good advice.
