Q: I work at Curves and deal with a lot of women who have high blood pressure. Those who are medicated are not to work out at more than 60% maximum heart rate. What are the health issues if one was NOT to follow these measures implemented by Curves International
A: Curves International does not want someone on medication to push themself too hard and get hurt. Certain blood pressure medicines prevent the heart from beating fast enough to send enough oxygen to the body with over exertion. This could result in fainting or worse.
Curves International’s rule is overlybroad. The beta blockers reduce blood pressure in part by slowing the heart. Indeed, if you are on Beta blockers, you cannot get your heart to beat faster while exercising to the same level that you could if you were not on the beta blocker. Exercising harder without getting the heart to a good aerobic heart rate is not only discouraging, but hard on the heart and the body in general which needs the oxygen nourishment from blood. Did you know that in Britain, beta blockers have been lowered to a second tier drug for lowering blood pressure? Yet in this country, they are still often the knee-jerk drug of choice among medical doctors………hmmmm
