Q: My husband just recently was diagnosed with HTN. He is taking 10mg lisinopril. He quit taking it for 3wks. Then his bp began runing high and he said he was going to just take it when it runs high. Within 1 hr after taking medication bp was within normal level. Also is it necessary to take a diuretic when on lisinopril?
A: Your husband is being foolish not to take his blood pressure medicine as it is prescribed. Presumably his doctor ordered medicine to control his blood pressure because it could not be controlled by other means. By taking his medicine intermittently, he gets all the side effects without the benefit of good blood pressure control. You do not need to also be on a diuretic to take lisnopril or other angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
In contrast the the statement in the answer, he indicated he is getting the benefit of lower pressure within 1 hour of taking his med. I too have days when I check my bp in which it is high (while on most days it is not high). Seems foolish to take the meds if you don’t need it – especially with the nasty cough as a side effect.
I agree, I was prescribed Rapaflo (silodosin) 8mg per day for BPH by a Urologist…. The stuff works GREAT within 8 hrs flow is back to normal. however I take it every 3rd day and it is doing the job, I am avoiding sexual side effects and My insurance charges me the same whether I get a qty of 30 0r 90.
I was taking 50 gm of Atenolol a day for many years, until I found out that it affects my sex-life. So I decided to cut it off by slowly reducing the frequency over a period of time. However, a few months after I stop taking the medication, my bp went up, and I resume treatment by taking 50 gm once in 2 days, and now one in 3 days, hoping to get out again.
I agree with the answer of the admin, as much as I would hate to take BP medication.
However, the responses show the problems these medications cause and the reason people discontinue or reduce them, something that is being ignored by most doctors.
I would suggest to people who don’t want to take their meds as prescribed to seriously look at their lifestyle. If overweight try to lose weight. This is the most important factor to help bring BP down. Look at your current diet. A low sodium vegan or vegetarian diet does work in many cases (it did for me). Do low impact exercises EVERY single day for at least half an hour, preferably one hour. But, if your BP is high (>150/90), and you wish to reduce the meds, then this really must be done under doctor’s supervision. The reduction of BP will not happen overnight, it may take months. Therefore, especially if you have other health problems, discontinuation of BP meds must be supervised and controlled.
I take 40mg Lisinopril and sometimes i get sexual side affects. Is there anything that can help me in that item
I found out after 3 stays (7days each) in the hospital pressure exceeded 225/125 and higher.. that it was caused but the Dr. prescribing 2 blood pressure meds at the same time…the effect was raising my BP .. I almost had a stroke the last time… Be aware Drs don’t fully understand what mutiple meds can do to some people…Boy was I sick ..lost 10 lbs I was taking Labetalol, withthes other meds and first hosp visit was (procardia) second time (atacand) third time (amprosiline).. linsinapril causes coughing…
This kind of thing kept happening to my mother and the doctor(s) suggested that she was not compliant and that if she would take the meds this would not happen. We know that she took her meds as prescribed. This is a frightening scenario! Hope you are better now and your BP is under control.
I concur frustrating……..i take 40 lisinoprol and a directic….
I have heard of people having strokes when being given medication to bring down bp. Since everyone is not the same and may have many different reasons their bp is on the rise, it would be a good idea to do some of your own homework on this matter and not just let doctors have all the control. Education is power, so empower yourself. Doctors are not GOD and they don’t know everything.
I’ve taken Lisinopril for about 4 years, no cough nor other side effects as yet. I also take Lasix and a Potassium supplement and maintain a low sodium diet. My BP has stabilized at 120/63 for the past two years and I’ve felt no unpleasant side effects. I take my meds exactly as my doctor has recommended, both dosage, time of day, and accompanying foods, hold down the sodium as much as possible. I also have a constant AFib. so must take Coumadin daily as well. One key to success, imho is to take meds, talk to your doctor if there are difficulties BUT expect results as explained by your doctor. Do Not Worry – about anything and your BP will be much better, even normal. 🙂 Again, IMHO.
First, I am wondering how high “high” is. If he is controlling his blood pressure with only 10 mg of ACE inhibitor alone, it doesn’t sound like it is much above the 140/90 limit?? Perhaps he can bring it consistently into the normal range with natural methods, including Resperate. Pomegranate is a natural ACE inhibitor. Celery, dandelion leaf, parsley, and others are natural diuretics. Regular aerobic exercise helps me to keep mine in normal limits without medication, along with the other supplements I mentioned. Rather than be castigated, he may well have a chance for normal blood pressure without meds. Just going without meds, however, is not a plan. Is he taking his blood pressure at home regularly? His doctor will likely not embrace any of this, as our “good doctor Rowena” similarly immediately knee-jerks to toxic pharmaceuticals as the answer. Dr. Sherry Rogers has an excellent book that might help, “The High Blood Presure Hoax”, wherein she offers many methods for naturally lowering blood pressure. Best of luck to you!!
if you are given medication to control some kind of problems not taken it or take it when you want is not going to help.

Has anyone had experience of Aleve raisong the blood pressure. I am on 100mg Atenolol and 80mgs Micardis+.Just recently my blood pressure has been quite evlevated. The only difference is I have been taking Aleve once a days for the past 3 months.
p jones I cannot take aleve without increasing my bp, so I have to depend on tylenol.
A class of meds called NSAIDS of which Aleve is one, is contraindicated (should not be used) for long term use in patients with high blood pressure. This class of medications can cause fluid retention and thus increase BP. People with kidney problems, or heart failure should not take NSAIDS. Motrin, Aleve, Advil, are some common names of NSAIDS. There are many more that are available by prescription only. Make sure you check the list of active ingredients for any over the counter products you use to self medicate. Many products treat multiple symptoms and contain Tylenol (acetaminophen) which is okay to use if you have high blood pressure, but may also contain an NSAID. Read labels. Hope this helps.
What kind of IDIOT doesn’t take HBP medicine??!!! Quit smoking, eat salads, walk, meditate, or enjoy being on life support and the horrible death your loved ones get to watch you go through. How arrogant it is to go off of medication for a dangerous condition. Stop being selfish and think about the people around you and what that ruptured brain artery will do to your life, if you still have one. What fools – playing with something so dangerous.
Aleve, definitely raises blood pressure,it has Naproxen Sodium in it, which causes high BP, and other allergies, I cannot have it for these reasons.
we need to understand that Hypertension is not a disease but a risk factor—- for heart/ stroke/ kidney failure.
Treatment is more a health promotion measure than disease management model
