I have isolated systolic hypertension on the right side. When I take a reading I start with right side, then left, and back to right. The second reading is nearly always lower than the first, Sometimes by as much as 20 points. What is happening? Does not seem probable that I almost always take it when it is the down cycle.
My wife blood pressure stays low,90 over 55.She takes blood pressure medicine,is this bad for her health.

I’M 85 YEARS OLD MALE HAVING DIABETIC FOR 40 YEARS & THE DOCTOR GIVES ME ONE METOPROLOL 100MG TAB A DAY 1/2 IN THE MORNING & I/2 AT NIGHT & MY AVERAGE B/P FOR THE LAST 10 DAYS IS 116/67 PULSE IS 77 IS THIS TOO LOW FOR ME I STARTED TAKING 1/2 TAB IT’S AT NIGHT IS THIS OK
the same is true with mine. first reading second and third reading as well. What’s the correct bp reading?
Same is true with my readings….which one is
correct….have read that adding all three and dividing by three will give an accurate number…
I have been taking captropil Tablet by Bristrol Myers but it is increasing my appetite,is there any way as to how Ican control my appetite
why my bp does not fall to normal ,even by taking high dosage ( 100mg/day )of cozzar pill . most of the time above 150/90 . i am 70 years old , not smoking, not drinking, and do my daily exercise.
Iam taking several types of Blood Pressure medication: Lisinopril, Atenelol, and Norvasc.
They seem to help only marginally. My BP still spikes up to over 168/108. But it is more often in the 145/96 range than it used to be.
My question, however, is whether BP medications can make a person tired. I am fatigued ALL THE TIME. I have mentioned this to several doctors, but they all minimize it. Being tired may not be life threatening, but it absolutely ruins my life. I can’t work, can’t do household chores, can’t socialize. If it is the medication, I think I’d just rather stop taking it and die of a heart attack or stroke than live like this!
I had a disorder like yours and got great results doing the following which was prescribed by several medical journals.
I take one Benicor low does/day which is combined with a dyeratic. Also 4 stalks of celery per day…no more. I take 4 pills Hawthorn and 6 grams of dark chocolate/day. Blood pressure is still somewhat high in morning 145/85 but during day from about 10:30 Am on it will drop to about 116/60. Makes me feel a bit lethargic until I get up and walk, then I am prime.
I recently bought a Respirant and have not yet tried it. It is suppose to benefit by stabiliizing the BP around the clock. I will see
I just got off my blood pressure medication. Although I took Hawthorn, coenzyme Q10, and other supplements and amusing Resperate, I didn’t really notice much of a difference until I changed my diet. Basically I am following the so-called no grain diet. It is also sometimes known as the Paleo diet. basically I have eliminated bad carbs from my diet. This includes all grains(for now,) potatoes and sugar. I am eating good proteins, i.e. white organic chicken meat, tempeh and tofu and some fish along with lots of vegetables, stressing green leafy vegetables in particular. I am also eating some legumes, lentils and beans and such. Technically on the no grain diet one must it eliminates all fruit for the first 50 days. But after being on this diet for just five days my blood pressure went to normal and even a bit lower then 120/80. All of this in 5 days!! There is a scientific explanation for this which I am not going into here but I would recommend the No Grain Diet by Dr Mercola for more info. This has been the greatest thing for me-I am losing weight like crazy and feel fantastic!
By the way, I was using a speech dictation program when I wrote that. It should have read I am using Resperate, (not amusing doh!) I think Resperate can be an important part of a blood pressure lowering program and i am currently using it regularly. AS for the diet, I heartily recommend anyone serious about lowering BP naturally to look at this diet-it has been nothing short of a miracle for me. IT has only been a week but my BP is so consistently normal or lower than normal that I no longer feel like I have to monitor it as closely as I was. Also, you don’t have to go grain/”bad carbs” free forever. You can add some of that and most fruits back into your diet after a coupld of months. The cold turkey part is to help rebalance your system and to get you off your addiction to carbs and sugar.
i am takeing daily dose of Imdur, norvasc, micardis, my bp drops very fast and is quite low, but then recovers, and lasts all day?? is that ok?
Dear Dr. Rowena,
I have been diagnosed with High Blood Pressure for the last 15 years. However, my doctor failed to renew my prescription for Accupril for my High Blood Pressure for over 1 year and 4 months now. My concern is that my High Blood Pressure is being left unchecked and now that I am unemployed with no income at present that it is very dangerous not to have my blood pressure under control. What can I use or do to get my High Blood Pressure lowered?
Thanks,
Dear Dr. Rowena
My BP fluctuate from one day to another and from day to night, high and low.is it due to medication.

I have High Blood Pressure I am a 63 yr of age Black woman many things have happen to me in the past years. I had and still have a skip Heart beat My Cardioligist along with my MD. suggested I have surgery (That I regret) I chose to take the operation I have a Defiberlator/pace maker I have been thinking about changing Doctors I am not happy, my pressure stay in the range of 140/80, yes I am on meds.
Good morning Doc. I take Lisinopril also in 2007 I had a right kidney remove. I was going to just take the pill every other day seeing that sometimes I get slight sharp pain in my left kidney. I drink plenty of water and cut the coffee out and have just put myself on a high fruit and fresh vege diet. HELP
Is flax seed oil with omega three really good for you??? I take it daily.
Yes flaxseed is very good for the heart. Omegas are also.
I want your view about use of Resperate. I am on medication for BP and Cholesterol.
I am a 37 year old african american female. Since 2001 I have been treated for hypertension. Using several different drugs to control my blood pressure and nothing seems to be working for my advantage. My mother and father both have high blood pressure. Please tell me if mine is an inherited disease. I am currently taking Valturna but its still elevated at 150/105. what advice do you to give to me tat will help me to get this matter under control. I want to live a healty life again.
I also have a family history of hypertension and was diagnosed last year in my late 40’s. While there is a predisposition to the condition it is not etched in stone. There are many factors that influence blood pressure such as diet, exercise, sleep, stress and nutrient deficiencies. I had to go on medication initally but over the past 8 months was weaned off of it and my BP now averages 116/61. I attribute the improvement to consuming a plant based diet and daily exercise. I also take a few natural supplements to include CoQ10, Fish Oil, and Magnesium. I would suggest trying the dietary changes first. DASH allows animal protein and Vegan does not. Try DASH first and if it still won’t normalize, opt for plant based. Also eliminate sodium and be very careful with sugar, especially if blood glucose is elevated. Work with a naturopathic physician to pursue these natural methods. Thye can also help you wean yourself off medication.
IAM PREDIABATIC AND HAYPERTINSION . I AM USING ZESTRILL 10 MG AND METFORMIN 850. DO I AM HAVING THE RIGHT MEDICEN
I have been on B.P. meds for more than 20 years – B.P. controlled at 120/80.
I have been having some episodes of dizzyness off/on.
My B.P. med was cut in half; then eliminated (2 months) in hope of determining if this was the problem.
I then had a mini-stroke (15 seconds). I took all test and checked out OK. Now on a blood thinner.
Question: Could dropping the B.P.meds possibly be the cause of the mini-stroke ????
It sounds like your BP is in good control so that doesn’t appear to be the cause of the mini-stroke. Mini Strokes are called “TIAs” or Transient Ischemic Attacks. These are caused by plaque and cholesterol in the arteries and clots. They have the same origin as Coronary artery disease and result from a blockage in an artery to the brain as opposed to one to the heart. Get your lipids tested and make sure you are achieving a total blood cholesterol <150 with LDL <80. This will ensure no plaque buildup in the arteries and make you immune to heart attacks and strokes.
Can you get an accurate blood pressure reading if the cup used on your arm to take your blood pressure is way to small for my arm. So small the doctor has to hold the cuff to keep it closed.
hi, my bp runs 150/90-210/101-i went off all drugs trying to do it natural for some reason when i over do with activity i get very weak i get pain near my heart area and my left arm will get heavy to lift. i had every test out there and they find nothing. when this happens my bp rises to 210/101 or so. heart disease runs big in my family. what can i do?
I have been taking BP drugs for more than 10 years, I
am 68 years old. My distolic reading has always been in the high 80’s to low 90’s. However it was always in
a fairly consistent range. In February of last year I had a severe stroke. After extensive re-hab I have been back at work almost a full year. Generally I feel
fine, but trying to control my BP now is difficult to
say the least. Especially when I first get out of bed.
Yesterday when I first got out of bed my BP was 170/102
I took my morning meds and my BP gradually started to
return to a safer level. It seems that the longer I remain up my BP is managable, especially in the evening
when I have a glass of concord wine. I walk in the morning for 20 minutes. Before retireing for the night,
I once again take my meds. My BP last night was 138/79.
One last thing, since the stroke my right ear feels full and I have cronic dizziness. The doctor’s: A Neuroligist, an E.N.T and my family doctor have been unable to diagnois my problem. The dizziness is most severe when I first arise in the morning,it gets better
during the day the longer I am awake, but it is always
there. It contributes negatively to my quality of life
and it sometimes accelerates my anxity. My BP medicine
for all the years is: Metaprolol and I also take a type
of Lexipro for G.A.D.(General Anxiety Disorder)
Thank you for listening! I am seeing my family doctor
tomorrow, again.
Sincerely, Bill Linebarger
My doctor decreased Prinivil to 5 millagram daily because it was too strong for my kidneys. Tday, it went to 48/56, pulse 62 and Iwaas so tired that I had to rest. IN 20006, I had an episode of atril Fib which ended in a stroke. My pulse rate is almost always around 60. The only time my BP was so low before was when i’m not feeling well with a virus. Is his normal?
I am taking 4 medications for high bp.they are clonidine patch 0.2 mg,hyzaar, amlodapine and corgard. all of these cause dizziness and often I suffer from vertigo.usually my bp is high in the am and lower in the pm.are these drugs interacting negatively with each other.
I would appreciate some info about the RESPeRATE I bought. I’ve used it for a couple of months now, but just can’t see how it would have any effect on my blood pressure. Could you please explain how this is supposed to work? I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and can’t use any drugs, so this was my only hope to lower my pressure (my systolic was over 180 recently at the doctor’s).
I assume that using it is supposed to be a relaxing experience, but I find it very stressful. The high and low tones of the music every so often change from the lower tone to an even lower one, making me always wonder if I’ve missed a higher one—don’t see any reason for this. And the tones are not always the same length, which I don’t understand either. And I’m not sure what the goal is, i.e. the number of breaths per minute.
Thank you for any help you can give.
I read in my recent health newsletter that to low cholesterol is just as dangerous as high cholesterol. It also said low cholesterol is the cause of depression in some people.I am concerned because my total cholesterol is only 127 and I suffer with depression . Does any body know anything about this.
I don’t think that is a true statement. I also have low cholesterol of 100. It is not of any concern. In fact, the lower it is, the better it is for your cardiovascular system. There is no harm having a low choelsterol level. The people in rural China have cholesterol levels between 90-150 and heart disease is rarely seen there. Yuo should commend yourself on your healthy cholesterol levels. It must be your healthy diet or good genes.
I forgot to comment on the depression. Are you taking a Beta Blocker? These are notorious for causing depression.
I see my doctor and cardiologist regularly. My BP spikes to well over 200/100, sometimes following minor exertion, sometimes is has awakened me. I feel very threatened, and must lie down; BP returns to normal after a few minutes. I am a 73-year old female, take 60 mg Lisinopril; have been on Bystolic, but had to get off due to side effects (and it seemed to raise BP). No one, not even the big med facilities on line, has been able to tell me why this happens.
I have been diagnosed with AtrialFib. I have had Hbp. (under control) for the last 20 years. I also have a tiny leak from my mitral valve and an slightly enlarge heart. I am 83 years olg. I had 2 severe episodes of AtFib 1 on July 20/2008 and 1 on July 20/2010 (2 years apart). I believe I have had a few more that were milded. I have seen a cardiologist for many years for my BP and 2 Drs. specialists on Cardio Therapy of the electricity of the heart. The 1st. prescribed Coumedin and a drug called Melpak. The 2nd. said that because of my age, obesity (192 lbs.) at 5 ft. 2 in., because I have anemia (now under control) and internal hemorroids he would not reccomend the use of any blood thinner. I am not taking any special medication for AtFib except for Atenolol 50 mg, once a day and Maxide 50 mg once a day toofor BP. He said that using a blood thinner will be too risky and that clogs and strokes do not happen so quickly. Am I at high risk of having a stroke as they advertise on TV?
I took my blood pressure and it was high 170 0ver 105 about twenty minutes later it was down to 120 over 70 which figures should I go you.
I am 65+y old and now live in Holland for the last 5 years. I come from India and since of late I spot spider veins on my thighs. Is this in anyway connected to HBP?
Your response will be greatly appreciated. Tks.
I HAVE BEEN ON AMLODIPINE 10MG. AND ATTENOLOL 50MG
FOR THE LAST 2 YRS. HAVE BEEN GETTING DIZZY LATLEY, COULD THIS BE DO TO
MEDS ?
I had a bad experience with dizziness from the Amlodipine also last year. Try taking it at night before bed and see if that helps.
My blood pressure runs around 132 to 135 over 85 to 90.I’ve brought it down from 190 0ver 150 by myself without drugs. Now my Doctor wants to put me on 50 mg of Topral. I feel like my blood pressure’s not bad and if I brought it down that much (on my own)why do I need meds now? Please respond, never got response last time.
Congratulations on achieving lower BP naturally. You do not need medication. I keep a log of my BP readings to show my doctor. If you get higher readings in the doctor office it’s likely due to the white coat effect, but it’s the 30 day baseline BP AVERAGE that is an accurate assessment of your true BP not a single reading in the doctor office.
Dr, my BP last month was 240/100. But as at yesterday it is at 142/80. Sometimes, it may come to 135/80. Iam using the following drugs- Amlodipine 10mg,Vasoprine,Folic acid, Vitamine C.What else do you suggest i should take.
Regards
With Resperate I have eliminated meds for BP and have an average 115/70 BP–but in the ankle the BP is 220/110; a blood vessel scan shows no blockages in the legs. What could be causing this high BP at the ankle measurement?
Dr,I am from west Africa ( age 33), i have divorce from my wife ,after that from regular medical check,my blob pressure was 140/130 and the doctor ask me to do several check,( HIV(-),possible kidney disease LVH ok,electrocardiogram OK )but all was Ok.But now I am on medication taking enalapril and atenolol for 2 months now ,I was 78kg (1.60m tall) and I lost 9kg ,like now I am 69kg ,reduce salt consumption and steak with vegetable and fruit as my first option for every meal. But now my pressure still 120-135/79-91.Is there any thing going wrong with my condition? I feel fine,no pain , no abnormal symptom. Could you please help? please I am concern.
i am reluctant to start BP meds. I am 63 years old, in good physical shape, watch my salt intake, etc. but i consistently get average readings like 142/90, sometime higher, sometimes lower. when do you know if it is time to start taking bp meds?
That’s getting into the hypertension zone (140/90) Diet and lifestyle changes and a few supplements got me back into the normal range. Try 100mg of CoQ10 first, If that isn’t enough, add in maybe 100mg of Magnesium and some Fish Oil. Add the CoQ10 and Magnesium and CoQ10 in 100mg increments as needed.
Hi Jason,
Thanks so much for your replies to all of our questions. This forum shows how many of us need more consultation than we are getting in the dr. office. I have finally given in to the fact that my body processes carbs like sugar and given up pasta and potatoes. This is helping me. I find that eating lentils will provide me with a meal that leaves me feeling full. Keep up the good work. Diet and exercise are key.
I HAVE HEMACHROMATOSIS AND I NOTICE A REDUCTION IN MY BLOOD PRESSUE WHICH IS HIGH TO LOW LEVELS SUCH AS 98/57 AFTER I HAVE HAD A PHLEBOTOMY IS THIS THE RESULT OF THE PROCEDURE
Dr, I have been on 20mg or Lisinopril for about 2 years. Since then I have made some life style changes which my blood pressure readings are always below 120/80. With these normal readings and still taking medication would the medicine be harmful?
