(CBS News) –If you’re consuming a lot of fructose, look out.
A new study found increased rates of borderline high blood pressure amongst people who consumed at least 74 grams of fructose a day – about four soda’s worth.
Fructose is found naturally in fruit and table sugar and also in high-fructose corn syrup, a corn-based product often used to sweeten processed foods, juices and sodas.
“There is no question that fructose itself appears to have effects that other sugars don’t have,” Dr. Michel Chonchol of the University of Colorado Denver, who worked on the study, told Reuters.
He cautioned that consumers should look out for products with high-fructose corn syrup, which can have high levels of fructose.
“In the grocery store, you see food without high-fructose corn syrup,” he said, telling Reuters that consumers should opt for them.
Over consumption of sugar, no matter what its source, is a major cause of diabetes, stroke and heart disease, says the American Heart Association.
Still, fructose seems to have a special roll in raising blood pressure, according to the study which appears in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Some people remain unconvinced. The Corn Refiners Association (high-fructose corn syrup is made from corn) claims the study was flawed, and the American Beverage Association also objected.
Yes the fructose level increases blood pressure . I have tested 3 times and found it to be increasing blood pressure and also sugar level. Especially if one consumes cooldrinks with high level of fructose his blood pressure bound to increase. Could you please list out fruits with high level of fructose .
There is absolutely nothing good about high fructose corn syrup. Fruit sweetened spritzers, such as Knudson’s, are the only “soda” drinks I occasionally drink. Natural sweeteners such as stevia, xylitol, and volcanic agave nectar are far superior in that they do not spike insulin levels as other manufactured sugars do. Their glycemic index is much, much lower.

I think you meant role:
Still, fructose seems to have a special role in raising blood pressure …
Actually, according to Dr Mercola, agave nectar isn’t much better than fructose as it is usually found here in the states. I try to stay away from all sugar, except for natural fructose in a low glycemic fruit such as apples. The point being, if Americans would cut down on not just the fructose but all sugars, we’d be a healthier nation with less obesity, diabetes and heart disease

Duh-I wonder why they objected. The truth is , HFC (high fructose corn syrup,) which is just about every processed food, is making our nation sick. I got control of my BP with diet and exercise. Most (but not all) people could do the same if they educate themselves and gave it a go. PArt of the equation is cutting down on the sugar and the bad carbs. You’ll lose weight and feel great too.
So, if this is the case, then why are America’s children being daily fed breakfasts and lunches full of high fructose corn syrup? This is a fact! Are they being deliberately fattened and poisoned?
