Q: Is Norvasc a beta blocker? I have to take the generic version, because my insurance is not patient friendly as far as cost. I also wonder if one brand of generic Amlopodine will work as well. My pharmacist changed brands a few months ago and now my blood pressure runs higher than when I was using the first one I started with.
A: Norvasc is a brand name of the drug Amlodipine. It is in the group of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It is not a beta blocker. The generic brands of amlodipine are felt to be equivalent. You should know you have the right to appeal any decision made by your insurance company. With medical records showing your blood pressure is more difficult to keep in control on a generic drug, it is possible your insurance plan will make
an exception and allow you to take the brand name drug.
I agree with Dr. Rowena. It is possible the brand name works better than the generic (and it is also possible one generic works better than another generic). When I took Norvasc there was no generic and it was pretty expensive – it did lower my BP some however, my ankles and feet swelled so much than I could barely wear my sandals. I had to have more velcro added to the strap because my feet and ankles were so swollen the strap couldn’t go around them. Eventually I quit Norvasc for a different BP medication. Wishing you well and that you get an exception from your insurance plan.
Now using generics for Lisinopril, after the branded version had seemed to work best, I recently switched to another retail pharmacy, and discovered their generic works better than the several generics I was provided thru my former retail pharmacy. A friend subsequently told me that my new retailer is her preferred pharmacy because they usually supply the best available generics, and at reasonable cost. Wish I had known sooner!!
What drug store did you go to? I am currently taking nifedipune er and is not keeping my bottom number down. Is generic calcium channel blocker and I would like to try another better generic of this. The name brand Azor helped better was too expensive.
when a woman is older than 80 and takes several meds to control high bp like haldol, atakan, vytorin, and aspirine, and cannot walk by herself, what can she take or eat to defecate without problems? She evacuates every 7 days and it is hard for her to do it. We give her oat, vegetables, fish, grains, pears, etc., and we want to know what other foods or meds we need to give her, so, she can defecate without problems.
