Q: I have been on Norvas and Atenol for high blood pressure. Is dry mouth a common
side effect? I developed two large cavities. Also what do you recommend for dry mouth?
A: Both of your blood pressure medicines can cause a dry mouth. It would be a good idea to have your dentist speak to your doctor. If your dentist feels the cavities are a result of your dry mouth, your doctor may want to change your blood pressure drugs or change when and how you take them. Chewing sugarless gum can help stimulate saliva production so your mouth will feel less dry. For more information about dry mouth go to this page on the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.
