(Foodconsumer.org) – Taking high doses of vitamin C supplements helps lower blood pressure, according to a recent analysis of clinical trials published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Edgar R Miller III at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore, MD and colleagues conducted the study and found supplementation of vitamin C lowered both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) significantly in hypertensive patients.
Observational studies have showed that increased vitamin C intake through diet or supplementation and high serum levels of vitamin C were associated with lower blood pressure.
The researchers reviewed 21 clinical trials published in MEDLINE, EMBASE and Central database from 1966 to 2011 to examine the effects of vitamin C supplementation on blood pressure.
I’ve been taking between 6 to 10 grams per day and have seen a significant drop in my BP. I use a high quality C complex like Super Bio C Buffered. I think it’s important to have a complex that works synergistically with each other to get the greatest benefit. It’s also very beneficial for the entire cardiovascular system as well.
Kindly info me as to what brand name is the C complex and available in which part of the country. Is it an organic product ?
Taking vitamin C helped lower my blood pressure by a lot, not a cure, but enough of an improvement that I was able to cut my medication by half. I hadn’t been getting nearly enough vitamin C in my diet before, and I hadn’t been taking vitamin C supplements. I had steady improvement for 2 months then leveled out.
I was wondering will eating oranges do the same as the supplements?
The article says through diet or supplements. So yes oranges would be a good source. Diet is usually a better choice if you can get enough of the vitamin through it but you should consider the acid content. It could be a little rough on your stomach. Ester C supplements protect your stomach.
I have not being using Viatamin C in my diet but will surely do so based on the findings.
When it comes to nutritional supplements, I take folic acid two or three times a day. The change in my blood pressure appears to be connected with the number of miles I walk in one day. There isn’t a strong connection, but at least there is something of a connection. I measure my blood pressure using an upper arm blood pressure monitor from Omron. I also check atmospheric pressure with a separate device in case it has any effect on the way the Omron functions.
May I know : 1) What is your daily dosage, 2) What is your body weight? and 3) What is your age?.. This info will help me as a guideline.
I will be taking vitaimin c more often. Thanks for the information.
Hi, I am in Iraq, we drink the citrus juice, without any additions, like water or sugar, to lower the high blood pressure, especially when its raised too much ,just throw few minutes will lower the high blood pressure.
Vitamin C may offer some lowering of BP but I did not see any noticeable results. Personally I had the best results with Magnesium and CoQ10. Those along with diet and exercise were the key to keeping BP in the normal range.
What would be the recommended dosage of a vitamin C supplement?
The dosage is discussed in the article
Yes, vitamin C helps also with stress. Iam working on lowering my pressure and found that high level of vitamin C is working for me.
Why do doctors recommend high blood pressure medication to patients who only suffer from diabetes? Encouraging the intake of vitamin C would do the job.
Oh how I agree with you!! I’m type 2 diabetic, but my blood pressure is normal— ave. 123/74— (until I get to my doctors surgery). I have been put on just about every type of BP med (including diuretics, which pushed my BG way up— it has never fully recovered). I have various allergic reactions to them all, but she is still trying! The latest ploy is to tell me that my kidneys are failing— due to high BP.If i DO have kidney failure, i would be more inclined to put it down to high SUGAR which is still about 20 point higher than it was before the diuretic (when I actually read the paper that came with the pills, a year or so after I stopped them, it said that pre diabetics shoud take care as this product can push the patient over into full diabetes) So the latest is Losarten, which when I took it before, not only put UP my BP, but caused sleeplessness, and eventually BAD palpitations. Unfortunately I am unable to change my GP, as all the local docs have full lists! It’s sad that I have to just go my own way for so much of my treatment.
