Q: I have been on Diovan for 1yr and metoprol for 15 months. In the last 4 months I have lost half of my hair. A Dermatoligist and my MD can’t find a cause. Could it be the BP meds?
A: Yes, it is possible that your hair loss is a side effect of your blood pressure medicines. Hair loss has been reported as a side effect of both Diovan and Metoprolol. It is more common for side effects to occur when you start taking a drug but they can develop at any time.

Absolutely! I was on the Seopropol for just a couple of months and my hair loss (male, 58 with the beginnings anyway) accelerated like crazy. I mean it was falling out in clumps. Luckily I took this as a wake up call, changed my diet and got serious about exercise and supplements. Also used Resparate. Lowered my bp to the point where it always normal or below. These drugs have all kinds of side effects. I would guess 50% of people on them could get off them if they changed their lifesyles. Unfortunately, most won’t.
That was Metopropol. I am disabled and it is hard to type.
By the way, the wake up call was the high bp. The hair loss was just another reminder why drugs are not the answer for me at least.
Yes, I’m on Diovan and my hair is getting really thin. I am trying to head it off with vitamins. Thinking about asking for a different BP med.
I’m on BP meds too and have thining hair. However I have had several surgeries within a years time so I was blaming the hair loss on Anesthesia. Didn’t think about the BP. A few months ago a friend suggested that I try taking Biotin every day. It has been great, my hair strands are thicker and stronger and the places that were balding are getting new hair. This is info from my hair dresser. She was very surprised. Biotin is for hair, nails and skin.
I have to be careful what I take because of my meds but this didn’t bother me but one has to be careful.
I take microzide or hydrochlorothorizide and noticed hair loss as well – is this possible?
I approached my doctor about hair loss and also I had an office visit to dermatologist for my hair loss. None of this said the reason for the hair loss except it is natural in old age was their answer. I used Diovan, Lisinopril, Hydrochlorothazine etc. They did not tell me any side effect.
at one point I was prescribed lisinopril and had significant hair loss. Dr. said that was one of the possible side effects and changed me to Benicar.
I`m taking Diovan 160/25D since 2001 and I didn`t feel any special loss of hair. If I`m against Diovan is because it`s the most expensive of all similar medicine, but the one that is recommend by doctors. Guess why?
what are some fruits and veggies or any other food that is good for quick bp lowering?
I found beet extract to be quite effective
try eating tomatoes and then take your blood pressure. You will probably see a drop.
Diovan was found in June 2010 to cause cancer at rate of 11% in five year users and that something like 41%
of users would die of cancer later. I took diovan for
over 5 years and wonder if I will be one of the unlucky ones. I found out about this on the internet.
Will you please let us know where you have read this information regarding Diovan and cancer. Thank you!
Can you please elaborate on this a little more. I would like what web site you found this on and on what date so I may reas it also. I take the same med for bp and of course Im very concerned and want to immediately stop regardless of what Dr says because they seem to want to hear what you have to say and disagree about almost everything.
Thank you for your response to this serious problem.
Diovan was not included in the study that linked ARBs with increased risk of certain cancers especially cancer of the lung. The increase in cancer rates found in the ARBs tested was approximately 25% over 3 years but you have misinterpreted the number. With lung cancer rates low in nonsmokers the 25%increase in risk raises actual cancer incidence with ARB users to approximately 2% from 1.8% with placebo.
I”ve using pledil for more than a year I notice that I easily get cramp and having constipation
