Q: Are there any long term hazards from taking beta blockers? They seem to keep my bp regulated more than other medications.
A: There is some concern that long term use of beta blockers may increase the risk of getting diabetes. This risk needs to weighed against the benefit of having good blood pressure control. You should discuss this further with your doctor.

Does this mean if you stop the blockers the diabetis will go away?
Question: Is Captopril a Beta Blocker? Thanks
Captopril (rINN) ( /ˈkæptəprɪl/) is an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor) used for the treatment of hypertension and some types of congestive heart failure.so its not a beta blocker.its an ACE inhibitor.
How come studies in several books note that four stalks of celery act like an ACE inhibitor? And studies show sometimes a copper deficiency leads to CHF? So shouldn’t antioxidants and celery, plus 3 cups of hibiscus tea daily or 4 stalks of celery one week on and 3 weeks off do the same as big pharma drugs?
I would like to hear more
well this is like damn if you do damn if you don’t , as the ol saying goes, and I think many seniors can relate to that.

Which one of the medications wouild be the safest to cancel if RESPeRATE is lowering BP
Is there a Beta Blocker that doesbn’t cause diabetes?
Get on Resperate everyday for 15 min an get LEVODYN off the web. My blood presure went from 210/110 Now 115 /65 It took 3 month. Took 3 levodyn a day an am only on 25 mg of tropol xl. Cut my meds an almost off all meds. I am thrilled……….Resperate is also a MUST…
I was put on them for my atrial fibrillation but when I realized they slowed my heart down so that I could hardly exercise and that they would interfere with my thyroid and my blood sugars I decided to go natural instead. Also the fact that if you suddenly stop taking them you could have a heart attack tells me how dangerous they are! I use hawthorn/magnesium/CoQ10 fish oils and other supplements and doing very well.
I was wondering, as I have atrial fibulation and high blood pressure also, did your electrophysiologist/cardiologist even mention the words “Pulmonaary Vein Isolation” to you? When my heart goes into A Fib it is difficult for me to breath, its very intence.
i have gone through a whole slew of blood pressure pills. and cant take any of them also i have diabetes
Now I know why my blood sugar was increasing even though I was on a strict diet for weight loss. I am off the beta blockers and my sugar is back to normal. Diabetes is too high a price to pay for lowering your blood pressure when most people can do it through weight loss and other life style changes.
Whwn I was on a bet blocker 10 years ago for high BP… I became almost suicidal. Thankfully my doctor saw the symptoms and took me off the beta blocker.. That was on a Monday.. by Friday of that week.. I was fine! it was scary though having those feelings and knowing it wasnt normally for me to feel that way.
I have been on 5mg Lisinopril and 5mg Bendro for about two years. What are the possible long term effects.
Go to http://www.WEBMD.com
It will give info on drug side effects.
Soon after being put on Beta-Blockers,(12.5 mg twice a day) I began having insomia,Diarrhea, and depression. I complained to my so called “doctor” and he prescribed anti-depression drugs and Ambrien for sleep. The depression drugs had a rebound effect and I was suicidal. They added another depression drug and I got worse. I talked to three doctors and not one of them figured out it was the Beta-Blocker causing my problems. On my own I slowly took less of the Beta-blocker until I was taking only 9 mg a day. I was then able to sleep better and able to deal with the depression with help of one weak dose drug called Mirapine 15 mg. My blood pressure went up as I cut back on the drug however with diet and exercise it slowly droped back down.It is now 140/85. I also take 2 calcium channel blockers.
I have been taking Plendil 5mg daily and it helps my BP in stable condition. Other have discontinued taking medicines like emdur and cozaac almost a year ago. Pls tell me if Plendil is beta blocker. Continuous taking what is the risk that I will get. thanks and hope to hear from you soon.
try a pure “Paleolithic Diet’ and also eliminate anything you are allergic to
This involves eating animal protein that is grass fed and grass finished (animals eat grass and are not fed grains the last few weeks)—Eat foodds in which the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids is not higher than 3 to 1. Do Qi Gong and Tai Chi–these practices balance the 2 parts of the autonomic nervous system (involuntary), the sympathetic and parasympathetic. Take a 40 minute walk every day. Do some moderate wieght training.Omega 6’s are inflammatory and the 3’s are anti infolammatory. Both perform necessary functions, but if the omega 6’s outway the 3’s by too much, the result is inflammation—-which is the cause of all our ,modern diseases—high blood pressure, cancer, arthritis, auto immune diseases, asthma, etc. Take a blood test for % omega 3 and for c-reactive protein.
If you have high bp these will be out of wack. The c reactive protein (a bio marker for inflammation)—shouold be between .1 and .8 These things will absolutely help.
I left out something very importantl Eliminate fructose, simple sugars, high fructose corn syrup asparttame, mono sodium glutamate and food dyes. You can look up dr. robert Lustig on a google search and you can view his lectures on the topic.
Is Atenolol a beta blocker
My mum was on Beta-Blockers and she developed diabetes about 8 years after commencing treatment. I am convinced her diabetes was caused by the Beta-blocker although every doctor I talked to denies this. I am told that I have a ‘family history’ of diabetes and that it is ‘genetic’ – but not a single doctor can prove it. Not a single one of the doctors has seen my mother’s medical records and say my claims are just ‘anecdotal evidence’. You can’t win.
I’ve also heard that certain Beta-Blockers can cause a change in personality and nightmares, especially in higher doses.
Sure It will give all kinds of nightmare and slow down your heartbeat. I am telling this of experience. I am a patient of highbloodpresure for the last 30 years.
I have atril fib and take Rymthal and Digocson. I am very concerned with the long term side effects. I have been takeing these for 6 months and already have constipation and energy problems. My doc says its not his drugs. Any suggestions.
I was taking hyzaar 100-25 mg one a day and coreg 12.5 mg two a day. Now got these bad headaches mostly left side top. Stop taking the hyzaar and just take the coreg two times a day. My headaches stopped but I’m a little headed. Blood pressure 127/78 so why should I take hyzaar.
Am using atenolol 50mg. everytime I forget to drink a tablet, I experience palpitation. are there any medicine to regulate blood pressure and at the same time prevent palpitation. right now, for about 8 years, i am taking atenolol. Since thenI was experiencing low blood sugar after 4 hrs eating. pls advise. Regards.
I am hypertensive and on about five different medications – Altace, Lisinopril, Lasix, hydralizine and clonidine and yet my BP is very high. What can I do to lower my BP?
WoW!!! Those MD’s have hit you with every other kind of BP med because they can’t figure out what is causing your hypertension. the more they put me on the worse my BP got. If you don’t know there are like 7 different kinds of BP med groups–you can look up these and what they target on WEB MD or any of the many web pages. Some examples are BETA BLOCKERS–TERRIBLE kind in my opinion and experience, the more my dosage has been increased the higher my bG sugar has risen, plus, NEVER just stop BB ’cause you will have rebound hypertension which can kill you, own experience!! and I can’t get off the *&#’s the withdraw is horrible! CALCIUM CHANNEL; ACE INHIBITORS; and as for hydralizine–supposed to dilate blood vessels–shot my ANA up so high my lupus flared and never have I had so much pain–they are known to cause lupus, why would a specialist prescribe it for someone who already is on the verge of lupus? Clonodine, another BAD one for me, and, again, NEVER just stop this either! Don’t know Altace and Lisinopril caused me to constantly cough. The best advice I can give anyone about BP meds is to get on GOOGLE, type in the name and look through every web page it refers you to on the medication–do this with any kind of medication cause metformin is contraindicative of many BP meds, Zanaflex and Lasix are also contra. Ask your Pharmacist for help they are the Medical people who have spent the time studying the drugs whereas the physicians learn most of their info from drug companies who give the free samples to the patient and beware of the newer drugs with the coupon card to save so much for a certain amount of time. The old-time meds are usually the safest because they’ve been out there the longest and any bad effects are well known. My son took a medication for acne when he was 16 and now he is 29 and has Chron’s and the company has a major lawsuit against it. It is a terrible disease as you can’t control your bowels. So, BEFORE you ever take a pill–even an anti-biotic–read the info that comes with it and take it seriously.
Please check GOGGLE for better, complete info.
I’ve been taking atenolol for many years. No diabetes.
Do have weight gain after stopping the htcz because of kidney damage. I was thinking of changing to a different and newer beta blocker that doesn’t cause weight gain but after reading these posts—maybe not.
I’ve made life-style changes and very gradually reduced my dosages hoping to eventually not need the beta-blockers at all. It’s scary though because my previous Dr. took me off them “cold turkey” and put me on ‘beta pace’ which does NOT regulate BP and nearly killed me–whoa! Once on Atenolol it’s almost impossible to get off. Be careful.
I have been on a beta-blocker for about 5 years, I need it to slow down my heart rate. I take 200-300 mg. a day. Without the medication my heart rate goes to 120 and sometimes higher. I start to feel very weak and nervous if I don’t keep my heart rate down. My blook work does not show that my sugar level is high. My heart rate has been like this for the last 40 years, my doctor was never concerned about it, just gave me tranquilizers to control the symptoms, until I talked to him about my heart rate, then he decided to put me on beta-blockers, after that I found that I didn’t need the tranquilizers. I think the beta blockers are the greatest medication that I have ever been given. It gave me my life back.
I’m on Atenolol for about 7 years. Dosage is at 50mg per day. If I forget to drink, my BP and pulse rate go up. I tried to reduce the dosage to 25mg but BP & pulse rate still go up. So I’m back to 50mg. Is 50mg safe for me? My annual blood work does not show hig blood sugar but my blood sugar goes down if I don’t eat for 4 hours. I am hypoglycemic. I really need your comment on this. Regards to all.
Pls is Lisinopril a beta blocker?
No, John it is not. It’s an ACE inhibitor.
I have been taking Atenolol 50mg, Bendroflumethiazide 2.5mg since 1989 for Blood Pessure. In 2000 I was admitted to hospital and after tests it was found out that I have a heart problem, I now also take 75mg daily for the heart problem. I have been having dizzy spells for about 2 years now! I find that about 3 hours after taking Atenolol the dizzy spells occur. I also get very nervous and shake! I had to call the paramedics out once because I felt really ill, they told me that my blood sugar was very low! when my doctor called late the same day I mentioned what the reading was for my blood sugar, my doctor said that is rubbish it cannot be right, what an I expected to make of that.
Sorry forgot to say I take 75mg of Aspirin.
I was prescribed Atenol 25 mg two years ago by Heart Surgeon after placement of stent. For the last two years I was doing fine. Heart rate never bothered me as it was 70-80. Blood pressure was well controlled 135-82. Recently I had bronchitis which cured in one week but General Doctor prescribed for me Exforge (amlodipine/valsartan 5mg/160mg) declaring it fit for me as I was having bronchitis and Atenol is not fit as it restrict airpassage. Secondly, Doctor gave me nebolizer to clear the bronchitis but after few minutes my pulse rate reached to 120 instead the earlier one 70-87. After using the valsartan, my blood pressure is 140/89 Dialostic number increased and my heart rate goes in the rane of 100-107. I personally feel Atenol is still better for me, though I am diabetics already. I need advice in view of my circumstance as explained above. Thanks.
