Q: Why does my BP go up at night when I am on high BP meds?
A: Blood pressure is not constant throughout the day. Normally it is highest in the early morning as this is when our internal body clock gets our body functions started for the day. If your pressure is out of control at night, you are at risk for even higher pressure in the early morning. You should talk to your doctor about how you are taking your medications. Changing the time of day or the amount of medication may get you in better control.
I don’t agree, but then again, I am not a doctor of medicine. If you study blood pressure cyles, everyone is different. And at the same time, everyone has general similarities. I am talking about variation over a 24-hour period. It is not unusual at all for blood pressures to be higher at times during the night than at other times during the night, just as in the daytime. Generally blood pressure is higher in the morning for most people. There are exceptions to these general rules, however.
I have no idea what “high” is for you. Hopefully, natural therapies can help you get it into more comfortable ranges.
All the best!!
As Dr. Rowena mentioned blood pressure readings tend to be higher in the AM. Often changing the time medication is taken will help level off the readings. Natural therapies are fine in conjunction with medication but should not be used in place of medication without guidance from a professional. Why risk a stroke or worse?
Excuse me, I meant to say with many people BP tends to be higher in AM OR afternoon. It varies, so medication should be adjusted accordingly.
Chart your BP readings over a week/or month at various times of the day to see what your range is during a typical day, and for specific hours. I learned I do better taking the BP meds at bedtime, rather than at breakfast, and tho the readings are highest in the morning, they are better(lower) throughout the day. Before I charted, I just tried to take them at the same time each day, but had no basis for a decision on the best time to take them.
I have the same problem. My BP was higher in the evening & I take 3 BP meds/day, but when I asked my doctor to spread it out during the whole day, it really helps.
D. Carestia is right. Every body is different, therefore “One size fits all” can not be applied. Although there are similarities in symptoms. Intelligent answer, indeed.

My BP takes an exception to your observation. It is 163/100 in the PM and 148/93 in the AM.Besides,i’m not currently under any medication,do i stand the risk of any complication?DO ADVISE PLEASE.
My blood pressure is always lower in the mornings and gets higher at night. You might try adjusting the time of day you take your medicines. I am on Benicor and take it around noon time.
have been on bp meds for 3 months but they only seem to work during the day. every morning I have a reading of 205/128,or near that. tried taking some of the meds at night and mornings….goes down during the day but they don’t help at night….so far have been on several things, some actually make symptoms worse…what would you suggest?
