Q: I was using Amlodipine for about four months. In the beginning I wasn’t having any side effects at all. My doctor was very impressed. However after about 3 months I started having terrible insomnia, anxiety, depression and a host of other side effects. My doctor told me to stop taking it. It’s been about 3 weeks and these symptoms haven’t completely subsided. How long does it take to get back to normal after discontinuing the medicine?
A: It takes longer to metabolize Amlodipine than other drugs in this class. Total elimination of this drug can be slower in older people and people with liver disease. Within three weeks the drug should be out of your system. You need to go back to your doctor. It is possible some of your symptoms were not caused by the drug but another problem.
I had the same problem when taking lisinopril 20mg – not bad side affects at first, but after 3 months had balance and dizziness along with dipression, muscle aches, metalic taste in my mouth tiredness, weakness and BP did not come down much still at 156/75.
I can relate to this to some degree as I had lightheadedness, muscle aches and fatigue with 20mg Lisinopril. It worked well to lower BP though.
I also was taking Lisinopril 20mg daily and side effects did appear. Depression, ED, lack of interest in almost all areas, and was hard to exercise. I quit cold turkey with the first month being almost unbearable, but I got over it and pushed on with daily exercise. I am a NEW person, now!
Am 37 male, I discovered at a point that I was restless and the neck was breathing or pumping. And I had to visit my doctor only to discover that my Blood Pressure was 159/103 and my pulse was 101 after 3 measurement. My doctor placed on Amlodipine Drugs 10mg immediately. After about 7 Days I discovered that I was restless and could not sleep and my head was aching seriously in the middle of the night. I had to call my wife’s attention to it who happens to be Doctor too. She suggested reducing it to 5mg. And ever since I have stopped using the drugs and my blood pressure is now between 110/70 and 122/79 also my pulse between 76 and 80. I subject myself to 3 Kilometer Exercise every blessed morning. Am fit now and better. But still having the headache till this moment from August this year.
A. Are you taking any other drugs? Beta blockers and statins can cause these symptoms. Both of these are bad drugs in my opinion.
1. Using the Resparate or doing Tai Chi are more effective, safer, and have no side effects compared with Beta blockers. (A study I saw too showed zero drop in serious events or deaths in people taking beta blockers.) Beta blockers DO cause insomnia and many of those other symptoms. They also prevent exercise from protecting your heart.
2. Very few doctors know to do the genetic test before prescribing statins so far. Most people test as having statins so ineffective that you are more likely to get cataracts and insomnia etc than be protected from a heart attack & are in the 99% of the people who get ZERO benefits. And statins tend to make the exercise you need to do to protect your heart cause muscle damage! Careful use of niacin, taking sterol supplements and deleting hydrogenated oils and soft drinks and most sugars and most refined grain from what you eat and drink ALL work better to protect your heart than statins.
B. And your letter here doesn’t show your sex. DO check with your doctor if you have those symptoms and are female! Some women get those symptoms from mild heart attacks!
I have been taking amlodipine 5mg for last four and half years and never faced such problem as faced by you. I am 69 yrs male ,Indian and a vegeterian. I feel your problem is not due to amlodipine but due to some other factors.Better change your Doctor.

I would like to find out if this statement about statins is true. I am also taking statins, and my husband too, so we would like to know if this statement about statins that it is not really benefiting us is true.
I took amlopidine for about eight weeks. My vision became very blurry and I had cravings for sugary foods. It took three weeks for the cravings and four for the blurry vision. I am using resperate twice a day for ten minutes each time and my blood pressure is improving.
Dear Ros,
We are glad to hear that Resperate is working for you.
And it is great that you are using it every day as recommended.
How long did it take for you to start to see results….1 month?
We would love to hear your story…it’s inspiring.
Please keep us posted about your progress and good luck.
