Q: At 76, my decade-long cardiovascular condition seemed to be stable with no stress test change from 2011 to 2012. However during prep for cataract surgery an atrial fibrillation appeared “out of the blue” resulting in ER exam and a prescription of Bystolic. How much do I have to worry about sudden serious escalation compared to all others with atrial fibrillation? My medicated blood pressure has been normal-to-low. Is occasional low blood pressure now a reason to be on extra alert? Is cinnamon a boon?
A: Atrial fibrillation is the most common irregular heartbeat. As long as your atrial fibrillation is easy to control, I would not be too worried. Many people need more than a beta blocker to control their atrial fibrillation. I am not aware of any studies showing normal use of cinnamon has either a positive or negative effect on atrial fibrillation.
I was taking cinnamon capsules (1000mg x 2) to help lower my BP and found that it was causing me to have palpitations so I would probably avoid that if you have a-fib.
Incase of A-fib is it advisable to take cinnamon, I am 72 years
It may well have been due to anxiety regarding the surgery
