(Boston Herald) KFC is counting down to Monday’s debut of the Double Down, a bun-free chicken sandwich.
The Double Down includes two white-meat chicken filets – “Original Recipe” or grilled – wrapped around two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese, and the Colonel’s sauce.
But before you consider standing in line for the $5 food item, listen to what Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the Harvard School of Health’s Department of Nutrition, has to say.
Willett broke down the Double Downs’ nutritional content and wasn’t impressed with the 540- and 460-calorie sandwiches, even if they’re relatively lower in carbohydrates.
“These are clearly not healthy choices,” Willett said. “The carbohydrates that come along with these sandwiches is almost always pure white flour, which has adverse metabolic effects and lots of empty calories.”
And what’s left is still bad news for the arteries, he said.
