Q: My husband has just started to take Lisinopril for his high blood pressure. Can this drug reduce his blood pressure within one or two days or does it take more time to get into his system? We are asking this because we think it’s more likely to be the RESPeRATE that is reducing his blood pressure (and his change in lifestyle) than 2 days worth of lisinopril (2.5mg). It would be great to know what you think
A: Lisinopril starts working within one hour of being taken. Half of the drug is eliminated from the body in 12 hours. However, your husband was started on a very low dose of Lisinopril. For high blood pressure a 10mg dose is the standard dose for adults with good kidneys. Most likely the combination of all three, the life style changes, Resperate use, and Lisinopril, is lowering your husband’s blood pressure.
there are so many natural remedies for lowering high blood-pressure; but MOST doctors know nothing about them because they have been led to believe that they don’t work.
Alternatively, if his blood pressure was so very high that it required the bullet instead of the softer option, this could have been used as a holding-drug and gradually phased out while the other is phased in. This latter option, however requires comprehensive knowledge of possible interactions between the pharmaceutical and the softer stuff,by someone who knows his onions. I would gladly help these people if they wanted me.

I have high blood can you help?
I was on lisinopril in combination with other drugs for two years with no success. I stopped taking it and my BP dropped 40-50 on top and 10-20 on the bottom. It also has many negative side effects.
I have been taking lisinopril for a little over two years now. Due to BP still running high,Doctor has me taking Bystolic 10 mg (2x day), Lisinopril 20 mg (2x Day) & Amlodipine-Besylate 5 mg (2x Day). BP is still running as high as 210 over 118.
Any suggestions ????
i just took 20mg of lisinopril as a new med had extremely bad reaction bp went up to 230…never again i will stick to metoporol and enalapril
I disagree with the doctor’s version. I agree that the dose is too small, and is probably having no effect on your husband’s blood pressure. I used to take this drug and was advised by my triple-board certified doctor that it took at least 10 days for the ace inhibitor to build up to appropriate levels in the body to have its ultimate impact on blood pressure. Also, the minimum dose prescribed is 10 mg., with many taking 20 mg. per day. When I took it, it did NOT reduce blood pressure in the first few days. Through the use of resperate, lifestyle changes, and appropriate supplements, I have gotten off of blood pressure medications.
The VA gave me Lisinopril a couple years ago. I started to have a bad cough. Would wake in the middle of the night coughing. I went on a vacation for 9 days and coughed most of the time. When I got home I looked up on the internet and learned Lisinopril may cause cough in 1of 3 people. I was never told of this by VA doctor. I no longer take blood pressure meds but try to manage with exercise and supplements although I had as high as 230/130 BP at one time.
What “lifestyle changes” and what “appropriate supplements” is required to get off taking Lisinopril?
What supplements did you take to lower your BP. I’m taking 40mg of lisinopril a day and my BP is still averaging 150/94. Also what lifestyle changes did you make?
Hi,
May I know the supplements you’re taking. I want to get rid off my BP medications. At present, I’m taking Benicar 20mg. and Coreg Cr 20 mg. I have resperate but don’t use it everyday. Do you use your resperate everyday? Do you think this really helps. Thanks. Appreciate your response to my query.
It´s ok
Lisinopril alone would not lower my blood pressure at all. My doctor prescribed Lisinopril and HTZ. Works like a charm. It is a combination tablet.
I plan on trying resperate.
I am now taking Lisinopril 40mg and have been on this drug for well over 20 years. I consider 158/90 very good. Yes, I am overweight. black and 69 years old. Needless to say, I am getting scared in my old age. I would certainly like to know how you got off this drug. Also, protein is leaking into my kidneys.
I use Lisninopril also for BP reducing as prescribed by my doctor(10mg). I also had to use half prescription of Doxazoson(at2mg)plus 5mg of Finasateride to get my PSA from 8 to below 2! The
half dose of Doxa keeps the side effect Finasateride for raising BP from happening!Bottomline is my BP is like a marathan runner at
low 110’s over low 60’s with beat rate in the mid
50/sec. I also go to 24HrFitness 5days/week on treadmill and exercise machines! I’m 72 years old!
Originally my BP was in the mid 140’s and had heart
murmur with an exeocardiogram analyze my murmur for
bottomline valve vibration energy efficiency-now I’m oaky! I guess using the “Resperate” would reduce my exersizing but my wife’s dieting on me
for fruits and vegetables I think is the “biggee”
solution cure!
What appropriate supplements have helped blood pressure?
Thanks.
Years ago my doctor prescribed 2.5mg.:no effect. After months he prescribed 10mg:no effect. I moved to Alabama from N.J.and new doctor prescribed a 20-25mg. and now my pressure ranges from 120/70 to 113/62. The lower dosages did not work! The higer one does. I am a white male, age 72, overweight, fairly active, and also taking 20mg.of lovastatin for choleteral control.
I disagree with D Carestia. I take 10MG of Lisinopril and in the first 4 hrs my BP dropped from 138/88 to 114/68. It has since stablized to 120/72 (give or take a few points on either). I saw a dramatic drop and control within the first day. I agree with Dr. Sobczyk.
I refused taking blood pressure medicine for a couple of years and tried alternative therapies, including RESPeRATE. Although I think if I had adhered religiously to diet, exercise, etc., I could have lowered my blood pressure eventually, I was under a lot of stress taking care of others. I did not have enough time to do those things. My bp was creeping up and up, so I reluctantly gave in to a 10 mg. dose of lisinopril. Even though the doctor said it might take time to take effect, it worked immediately for me…the next day.
How does the doctor know if you have good kidneys or not unless he does testing to check their function?
different persons have different reactions to same BP medication. Doctors only prescribe.no dictionary says prescribe means solve.
My Dr told me that Lisinopril causes a cough in 10% patients. I developed a cough after one year use. Night and day I coughed at 10mg per day. I went off of it. My husband was prescribed the same about 3 years ago, inappropriately, because it was after only one high reading./ He does not have high BP. He began developing a rash, diagnosed as pityrhiasis. I looked up the word through GOOGLE. 30 drugs are implicated in the onset of pityrhiasis. It look him a year to clear up. He had it from head to toe. Not fun. He takes no BP med and is fine without it.
I was put on Lisinopril ans in about four to six weeks I had a horrible persistant cough that would not stop,my doctor never found out what was causing the cough. It just so happened I had an appointment with my gastroenterologist, within ten minutes he knew what was causing the cough. So just be careful and if you start coughing and cant stop you have a good idea what it is.
I started 5 mg. of Lisinopril last week…I took my first pill at bed time on Wednesday Night..my Blood pressure was down the next day and has continued to be down! I went from an average of 144/77 to 127/62.
I too used to take Lisopril, until I started coughing. The doctor switched me to Benecar 20 mg, but I’ve been able to cut it in half, thanks to diet and square & round dancing. Resperate also helped. I’d like to get off completely but am afraid to go cold turkey. Any ideas?
I had taken Lisprisnol for more than two years, when I experienced a reaction via extreme swelling of my lips, mouth, and some breathing difficulty that resulted in an emergency room visit. My physician changed my medication, but advised that delayed drug reactions some time did occur.
I wish to take this opportunity to tell EVERYONE on doctor-prescribed medication to CONTINUE to follow their doctor’s advice and NOT to discontinue, increase or decrease any medication without being advised to do so by a QUALIFIED Health-care Professional WHO KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING. Blood pressure is best maintained at 115/75, certainly not higher than 120/80. But again, NO self-medication, please! Patients on statins should consider CoQ10 Supplementation; but a good choice must be made as some types are not, or minimally, bioavailable to the body. Many Health-care professionals and doctors believe that the body’s natural production of CoQ10, which decreases with advancing age, can be shut down still further by up to 40%, as both cholesterol and CoQ10 are synthesized in the body from the same substance. CoQ10 is also an essential component of the mitochondria which powers body-cells and is critical in the formation of ATP. It is bellieved by many that lack of CoQ10 can lead to Congestive Heart-Failure. Again I strongly advise AGAINST self-medication as CoQ10 can itself lower blood-pressure somewhat, so the patient must be in PROFESSIONAL good-hands and MONITORED. ADDITIONALLY, one must ascertain whether there exists the possibility of ADVERSE interaction between Pharmaceutical Drug and natural nutrient. I WARN everyone about the dangers of going off their medication or of tampering with dosages without their doctor’s or QUALIFIED Health-Care Provider’s knowledge.

Lisopril was not working to reduce my blood pressure. Dr. kept increasing until I was taking 80mg. Had extreme pain in my legs. A year ago, I changed doctors. Pain has decreased, but still with me. New doctor changed medicine to 5mg Amlodipine. Blood pressure better.
I was on Lisinopril 20mg for months, I coughed everyday, all day. My doctor told me this was due to sinuses/acid reflux. I literally could not function, I worked 8 hrs a day, could not sleep at night for the cough. I became my own doctor, made an appointment and asked hime to prescribe me another prescription, and the very same day I stopped tking the lisinopril I stopped coughing and I could not be happier.
What did he prescribe? Is it working?
You are exactly right. I experienced the same symptom and noticed when I too stopped taking Lisinopril, the cough went away. I am now taking Binicar, but working towards not having to take any BP medications. Hydroclorthiazide caused Melasma, darkening of facial cheek area from sun exposure. I was devestated when that occurred. Not taking that either. My doctor at the time was not even aware that this could occur; found out by dermatologist. I have to continually wear sunscreen daily. No one really knows how a drug might effect individuals, that’s why it is so important that we do the best that we can do to take care of ourselves as naturally as possible.
Had 5mg Amilodipine prescription for 4 months, BP not dropping. Stepped up to 10mg, no effect. Started with just 5 mg Lisinopril, the next morning BP dropped. am continuing on it
What was the blood pressure before starting on these dosages? I’m experimenting also.
I have had blood pressure readings averaging 140/100 for the past four months. I was told to buy my own manual BP equipment and take my BP for 2 weeks. My BP has been 140/100 for the past two days no matter what time of day or night, and this morning was still 140/100 so I took my first 2.5 mg lisinopril. Four hours later my BP is 118/79. Side effects – diarrhea, tired, and my heart is pounding some. I’m scared to take it again since it dropped my BP so drastically.
I take clonidine for my blood pressure was able to cut dose in 1/2 with taking 100 mg coq10 liquid i buy it at Costco, keep in refrigerator, take it first thing in the morning this has helped me greatly, I didn’t know many drugs rob our natural coq10 that our body produces like beta blockers and statins and other meds, this helps lower blood pressure, helps give you more natural energy helps muscle soreness is a natural antioxidant, I buy this myself and have no interest financially, but this really works, please try it, finally something that is real and not a rip off, I also got my vitamin d level up and I feel so much better I was getting sick all the time and now I haven’t been sick in several years. Vitamin d is cheap take it with some oil or a meal to help with absorption, I take 5,000 units a day to maintain blood level, checked by labs the experts say level should be 50-70 for optimal health, you don’t want low end of normal lab which is usually 32, also cheap vitamin d3 in grocery store is absorbed so much better than prescription vitamin d.[ which is d2] the inferior absorption per vitamin d council. Heres to your health.
I have been taking 20mg of Lisinopril for about 18 months in the evening before bed. I have been happy with it because my BP in the morning has ranged from 105/69 to 122/72 or thereabouts. I didn’t think to take my BP at night but in the last few days have done so and am shocked to see that is in 160/90 to 175/96 range. Tonight I took the pill at 10pm and after an hour my BP had already gone down by 15 or so. I plan to talk to my doctor tomorrow but generally should Lisinopril wear off that fast or should it take me through 24 hours? Does a higher dose solve the problem or does the “low in the morning/high at night” issue require a different type of drug or other approach?
I had similar issues last year with another med and then was switched to Lisinopril which worked very well at keeping BP stable. That did not mean that all was well though as I knew it wasn’t getting to the root cause and was just masking symptoms. It wasn’t until I went on a very strict plant based diet that I was to free myself of the drugs. The discontinuing of medications represents the reversal of atherosclerosis as the body is able to maintain normal BP.
I was on lysinopril 10 mg for 5 years and three weeks ago I quit taking it. I had constant muscle pain in my arms and legs which I attributed to my job, but which have since disappeared since I quit taking the medication. I have been taking my blood pressure twice a day since I quit and it is always normal, around or on 120/80. So five years ago, on the basis of one high pressure reading, I was prescribed a life sentence. I have lost weight since the initial prescription and now have an active job, but every time I see the doctor they just whip out the prescription pad. Now I feel 20 years younger. A 49 year old woman shouldn’t be hobbling around like an 80 year old because of muscle pain.
Glad you could see through the BS. While I know I need my meds for the time being, I know that soon within the next few months I will be done with this crap. Juicing, change in diet, plenty of water and exercise will get me off of this stuff. I fear as I get older I will start having issues with my liver or other issues because of this medicine. I HATE man made drugs. They are only a quick fix for a problem you can fix permanently with changing your lifestyle.
A vegan diet works best. Nothing with a mother or face (no fish, fowl or meat) no dairy of any kind or any products made from dairy. Not a single drop of oil, no caffeine in coffee and above all be very careful withe sugar and sodium. Follow this plan and you BP will plummet in 2 weeks.
I started on Lisinopril 9yrs ago. At first it worked very well for several years. Then I started having low heart rate in the 40,s during the day (I am not an athlete) this was causing dizzy spells and now this week doctor wants to put in a pacemaker! When I go off the medication my pressure is around 140/80 hr.62+. I have begged to be taken off the Lisinopril and they insist it’s not what is causing my dizzy spells which now last on an off all day except about 12hrs after the bp med wears off I feel great and regular blood pressure help!
Ann, It surely seems if you blood pressure is so low that you should be off medication, or on a lower dose or a different med. I understand blood pressure meds wear off after about 12 hours. Perhaps you need a second opinion.
I am starting Lisinopril today and thought I would check and see how people with experience are doing with it. I am going to start with half the dose and check my BP before and after and several times a day for weeks. It seems like it can lower BP quickly in certain instances.
Be well – Nora
