Q: Does lisinopril have any effect on male genital organs? Its prolonged use may impair the sexual life and have some adverse results on renal system.
A: Lisinopril use may decrease libido and cause erectile dysfunction. Use may also cause your kidneys to fail. These are known side effects but do not occur very often. You should discuss your concerns with your doctor. All drugs have side effects. You and your doctor need to decide if the benefits of a drug outweigh the risks associated with taking it.

There is nothing in the literature that I can find relating to Lisinopril male and sexual dysfunction. Is it possible that the dysfunction stems from high blood pressure?
Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor and works just like any other BP medication–it relaxes the arteries, increasing blood flow thereby lowering BP. Sexual dysfunction is an indication of plaque buildup in the arteries of the genitals which may also indicate coronary artery disease.
All BP medications have an effect on the ability to get an maintain an erection. I konw the doctors will tell you that some of the medications minimize this effect, but if you take them long enough they will affect you sexually as they will affect you in some other negative ways. And contratay to the comment, all BP medications do not work the same. They operate by different mechanisms and affect the body differently.
Would Lisinopril ever be the cause of blood in the unrine? I take 40mg of lisinopril twice daily.
Why is my Blood pressure always High when Iam in Drs. Surgery as High as Bp 150/100 and when Iam at Home and I checked like first in the morning it can be as low as 130/80 or 120/80 or highest diastolic 85 at Home. Iam taking lisnopri 2ommg and Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg daily at present. My Dr recently added Potassium chloride 600mg twice daily.
You have White Coat Syndrome. I have suffered with it for many years and am quite familiar with your condition. It is possible that your doctor is treating your WCS rather than real high blood pressure.
I have this problem when I go to my doctors office, my pressure is very high. I usually take my pressure before going to the doctors office and it’s fine. I do a daily reading of my pressure and record it, so when I go to see my doctor I give her my chart which is a much better indication as to how my BP is doing. She also appreciates this chart. A monthly average of your readings is a better indication as to how your medications are doing.
I have the same “White coat” problem. I tried to convince my doctor but he doesn’t believe me and wrote a prescription. I think he listen a bit more now that I told him the drug almost made me pass out I got so dizzy. Not sure if this was low BP or just a side effect. You’re right though, in that you need to keep a log and bring it with you to your Dr. visit to shown him the numbers. I made a mistake and didn’t do that but I’ll be smarter next time.
It also causes intestine infalammation my experience and was taking less then that once a day. I had to tell the doctor to change the pills I was taking.
I used to take Lisinopril and it resulted in ED and a persistent cough. After I switched to a different med these symptoms eventually went away. I think I read that ED appeared in about 1% of people taking Lisinopril, but my doctor said in his experience it was closer to 10%.
Comments from my doctor and from friends who have taken Lisinopril lead me to believe ED is much more common than doctors or literature will admit.
I think I have a divergence of opinion with the doctors response here. I took 20mg of Lisinopril last year and it was touted by my doctor as being protective of the kidneys. This is also documented in various other literature. I don’t think this is correct.
I had a bad reaction to lisinopril,it made my tounge swell up and put the hospital.
Iam on metaformin ER 500 can it cause musle pain or increase muscle soreness? I had a total knee replacement in feb.but I have been having muscle and nerve spasms.I am also on Lisinopril 10 mg Bid,does that cause insomnia?
I took Liinopril last year and can only say it caused fatgue and lightheadness which caused a reduction in quality of life. I’ve tried several meds and they all produce the same effect. I felt better with HBP quite honestly. Traditional medicine is grossly lacking in developing an effective treatment for HBP without side effects. My advice would be to try as many natural methods as possible first.
I can echo much of this. I cannot remember how many different BP meds I have tried and I definitely have a better quality of life if I am not taking them. I am always tired, short of breath and without energy on the BP meds. I think the thing that bothers me the most is that the medical establishment does not try to treat HBP, they just try to treat the symptoms – there is no effort to determine why your BP is high, lets just get rid of the symptoms. What a crock.
The best way to treat Hypertension is naturally via diet and exercise. I’ve conducted an experiment on my own BP over the past 6 months and was weaned off all medication. One hour a day of exercise, and a very strict diet–no dairy, meat or oils. I feel much better now with normal BP than I did in the 2 months taking meds. As you indicate, meds treat symptoms, but diet and exercise address the underlying cause. The key lies in restoring the lining of the arteries (endothelium) capability to produce nitric oxide which is beaten down by the Western diet.
I agree with you Nick, I did the same eliminated All meats Diary products and junk food .I only eat fish ,red potatoes with Fish and and vegetables and I eat lots of fruits for snack with unsalted nuts like almonds , walnuts, Brazilian nuts. As for exercise I cycle 30 miles per day which comes out to 1hour and 45 mins. Of cycling . My pressure is at 117/60 .my heart rate is 47 bpm. And I feel great better than I did when I was 25. I’m 51 yrs old now…I stool take my BP meds… They are only 5mg. Enalapril,Amlodipine.
BEEN TAKING LISINOPRIL FOR 10 YEARS, AND OVER THE YEARS I WAS VERY SEXUAL AND NOW , CAN HARDLY GET AN ERECTION AT ALL EVEN WITH USING VIAGRA. AND IT SEEMS LIKE MY BLOOD PRESSURE STILL IS HIGH…. SO ANY MEN OUT THERE PLEASE ASK YOUR DOCTOR TO TAKE YOU OFF THIS MEDICATION. AND PUT YOU ON SOMETHING ELSE.. FOR YOUR SEXUAL HEALTH….. AND YOUR LOVE FOR YOUR SPOUSE..
Have you tried Viagra Super Active+? They work for me, however I’ve only been taking Lisinopril for a couple months, not 10 years like you. There are no side effects from combining these two pills.( Check it out on the internet Google search.) I’ve stopped taking Lisinopril after my doctor told me about side effects such as kidney failure, etc. I’m used to my high blood pressure and feel better when I don’t take Lisinopril, like the others.
Yes, Lisinopril does cause ED, a cough, severe rash, floating itch, shortness of breath, muscle soreness, and joint pain. I was on 20 mg daily but dropped it cold turkey and got rid of my PCP. Lost 30 lbs and picked up my exercise and my BP came down but Lisinopril did nothing to reduce the pressure. Spent money for nothing!
I agree Dan fully with what you are saying. I have been on five different BP meds, Lisinopril being one of them. I have cut out two of the meds and my next one to cut down in dosage and than get off of completely will be Lisinopril. I have also started a strict Herbal supplement regiment to help reduce my BP. So far my pressure has been in control without taking the two BP meds I stopped and using the hurbal supplements. My goal is to stop all BP meds. The doctor said it will never happen, we will see.
Is there any articles documented through the New England Journal of Medicine related to the side effects of Lisinopril. Has anyone switched from taking lisinopril and began taking natural remedies for high blood pressure…; if so, was it successful in reducing your blood pressure to normal? Once you get off bp medicine, does your pressure become higher?
What are the names of some successful natural remedies that has reduced high bp?
I have had some success with hawthorne extract. The extract not the tincture. It is very thick like tar. It appears that patience is required though. It took like 6 months for me to see results. I believe I have white coat syndrome – bp always high at the doc’s office. I measure my bp at home but I exercise quite a bit so it’s hard to get a valid reading – usually I’m taking it too close to an exercise session. And it’s always ok. Doc suggested taking bp in morning before exercise. Seems to be coming down.
What is the difference between Enalapril and Lisinopril.?? I know from the same family Ace Blocker but the side effect from Lisinopril differs from Enalapril . Is there any other difference from these drugs?? .
Men need to realize that if they need to use Viagra, then this might be an indication of plaque buildup in the arteries of the genitals. If you have plaque buildup in those smaller arteries chances are it is occurring in the coronary arteries as well. Solution: consume a plant based diet, this will dissove plaque buildup in the arteries, including the genitals, and will increase nitric oxide production which is the most powerful vasodilator in the body. Drugs don’t solve the problem systemically nor do they get to root cause but diet does.
Lisinopril is made from snake venom. Personally I don’t think anyone should take it if they can get another option and their blood pressure is not out of control.. It made my tongue swell and go numb. It made me lightheaded and lose my balance and I actually fell.( I am an athlete in pretty good shape). My hand would go numb.. I was fatigued and had very little interest in anything — no sexual interest… For some strange reason it makes you cough a dry cough.. I felt weak and dizzy. actually was taken by ambulance to hospital. quit taking it and realized that my blood pressure wasn’t high enough to be taking it anyway. I had a one time high pressure. I started feeling normal again and it was great!!! I will never take it again.
I am confused by the many comments. Is there a definitive answer to the possiblity of linisopril casusing kidney failure?
I would say the answer is No. My doc had me on Lisinopril 20mg last year and said it was protective of the kidneys, which is why she prescribed it.
I’m finding that taking a Zinc supplement helps restore the “libido” which many BP meds & statins deplete. Try 25mgs 2x/week at least. If you take more & you get a headache, cutback to 25mg 2/week, the dosage I’m comfortable with
Of meds used on my HBP – with WCS – Lisinopril works best/most effective, and no side effects issues, until Amlodipine was added, but that made Lisinopril more effective. Exercise & diet help much; the (bad, bad)beta blockers were stopped & everything is better, especially libido.
I have been on many different blood pressure meds for years. Trying this and that. I love all you doctors, but the 20 minutes i receive at my appointmets, i became my own doctor. Lisinopril for sure stops my erections, no doubt. I stoped for two weeks and i was horny as a billy goat and had erections. So i decided to work out and loss weight. I lift weights, ride a bike, hit a heavy bag, and walo, im like a new man lost 50 lbs. Strong like an ox, and my sex is back again. This took me 14 months, and its for life now. And i only eat the right foods. One problem i cant keep the women away from asking me out, Honest, Im married! So there is all the proof you need. Get of off the rocking chairs and get moving !! By the way im 57 years young!
I took Lisinopril and ended up with problem with my kidneys .Could not urinate. was taken off it
