(Reuters Health) — People with high blood pressure who want to drop some pounds may want to choose a low-carb diet, a new study shows. In the study, overweight or obese individuals who went on a low-carb diet lost about the same amount of weight as those who cut down on their fat intake and took the weight-loss aid orlistat (sold as Xenical or Alli). However, the low-carb diet produced more favorable effects on blood pressure.

The Low-carb/no-carbs high protein diet has been a subject I’ve followed for many years as a health and fitness enthusiast/bodybuilder. Now at age 65 and still going strong I thought I’d lend my thoughts on what I’ve learned over the years about high protein/low carb diets.
I’ve studied the problem from the standpoint of a bodybuilder who wants to shed fat and build muscle and over the years I tried both high carb and low carb diets. What seems to be missing in most explanations is soma body type. I am a Mesomorph (athletic build)and by definition am prone to gaining and losing weight easily, but weight is not my concern. My concern is the ratio of body fat vs muscle and fat/protein/carbohydrate ratio in my daily diet which usually is somewhere around 10/60/30, so I’m already on a high (60%) protein diet and that seems to work for me. It’s a very complex subject. At age 65 I wonder more about my blood pressure and how a high protein diet will affect my BP. I’ve read mixed reviews over the years and even have a book on the subject entitled “Protein Power” published in 1996. I guess now I’ll have to re-read that book again.
