Q: I had 2 Transient ischemic attacks. I have heard that I am a high risk for a stroke. What can I do to prevent a stroke?
A: Make sure your blood pressure is in good control and have a healthy lifestyle. Take all medications as prescribed by your doctor. Don’t forget to watch the alcohol you drink and avoid smokers. To learn more about strokes and preventable risks go to stroke.org
My mother had a TIA last year and these are termed “mini strokes”. While its important to keep BP in control as the doctor indicates, it’s probably even more important to keep cholesterol in a healthy range as these strokes are of the ischemic variety and are typically caused by plaque and cholesterol deposits in the arteries. These have the same origin as coronary artery disease and heart attacks. 92% of all strokes are of the ischemic variety and only 8% are hemorrhagic due to HBP. I think the main goal is to keep total cholesterol less than 150 and you essentially save yourself from heart attack and stroke. I am not a doctor but this is what I have learned about strokes from various doctors I have consulted with on the subject.
