Q: Do Lisinopril, Metoprolol, and Lipitor have an adverse effect on sexual function or desire? What can I do?
A: Of the drugs you mention, metoprolol is known for causing sexual dysfunction. Talk to your doctor. Perhaps you can be changed to a different medicine that won’t have this side effect. You might want to consider using the Resperate. The Resperate lowers blood pressure without sexual side effects.
Why take Rx drugs when one can reduce B.P. by yoga,
meditation, and properly suppervised breathing exercises and aerobic exercises . I have succeded in my case, my Sys. is 110 to 120 mm Hg / Dias. 65 to 75
mm Hg and H.R. is 65 to 70.

I want your views about Respaerate. After using it, would I be able to get off my BP medication.

My doc put me on Metoprolol because she said it would NOT cause sexual dysfunction. What’s the real story?
Don’t feel bad; my IDIOT doctor told me that the black, itchy mole on my back was just, “…sometning that moles do.” It was later [2 months] diagnosed as a Class 4 Melonoma. Personally, I think ‘Witch Doctors’ were smarter.
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW,WHAT I CAN TAKE TOO LOWER BLOOD,WITHOUT ANY SIDE EFFECT
I lent that people differ and they react different differntly to the same medicine. for example my heart blood pills do cause that sexual disfunction.they are called ‘aldomet’ but to some people they don’t.any talking to a Doctor about any change is is best.
Ive talken metrolprol for almost 5 yrs now and it has increased my sexual libido significantly. I was on another with it until april 2009, but my bp went to 125 over 75 and now I just take 50mg 2x daily of the met. and am going to lose more weight so i can get of met. too.
I am not a doctor but here is my take on it. Metoprolol is a Beta Blocker and Beta Blockers will/can cause sexual dysfunction.
I am sorery, but this is yet another cursory answer at best from the “good AMA doctor”. Respectfully, doctor, evidence abounds that the statins can have a serious negative effect on sex drive, see e.g., http://www.medications.com/se/lipitor/sex-drive, among many other sources. The same is true of Metroprolol which can cause “decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm”, see e.g., http://www.drugs.com/metoprolol.html. It appears that even the “good doctor” is aware that the pharmaceutical ACE inhibitors can have an effect on sex drive, as can the pharmaceutical diuretics, as their primary function is to reduce fulids and blood volume.
While resperate is an important tool in controlling hypertension, there are many others which include diet, exercise, weight loss, stress management, sleep, and many excellent supplements. For example, instead of the statins, you may wish to research red yeast rice, niacin, polycosinal, and fish oil. Indeed, one of the drug companies sued the developers and marketers of red yeast rice to try to get this natural supplement off the market. They lost that lawsuit. Red yeast rice, for example, has been instrumental in reducing my total cholesterol from 225 to 167 without any negative side effects. There are many natural diuretics as well as natural ACE inhibitors that are available to help with your hypertension, as well. EECP is another modality that has worked wonders for many with hypertension. My last suggestion would be to consider working with a physician who is either a naturopath or an M.D. with a wellness/holistic or alternative approach and who includes natural supplements and natural foods in his or her recommendations.
These are just the opinions and experiences of a guy who has had serious hypertension, and who has researched it to death to find my own drug-free cures. I hope they might help you, as they have helped me. All the best!
Could you please elaborate on some of your important drug-free cures apart from “diet, exercise, weight loss, stress management, sleep, and many excellent supplements” you mentioned? Or where we could find such drug-free cures? And could you please recommend some M.Ds. with a wellness/holistic or alternative approach to treating/controlling hypertension?
Thank you, although a complete discussion of your question would take more time and words than you can imagine. I spent 3 years researching blood pressure and natural cures on the internet to discover what works for me. Additionally, the medical doctors at Whitaker Wellness Clinic, in Newport Beach, California, were instrumental in assisting me with more natural control of hypertension. You can find them on the internet! Hope this helps!!
I’ve been taking Metroprolol and Lipitor for several years. It hasn’t affected by sex drive at all. Perhaps I’m an exception, rather than the rule.
Thank you for the info regarding natural ace inhibitors. I have been looking for alternatives, as I do not do well on many of the meds. Sick of trying new ones and want to get off entirely but I have to find new doctor who will agree to this.
Good luck with you own treatment and thanks.
While I think that Resperate is a good thing to do, I would warn people that it will not control Hypertension on its own. Unfortunately, Hypertension is a complex desease that has many dynamic associated with its course. Now we know that even people with so called sporadic or white coat hypertension should be treated, because it is a red flag that the system is being subjected to very destructive hemodynamic forces and in time your organs as well as your vessels will give out.
Where can we obtain a list of these holistic/alternative doctors? Ordinary Primary Care Physcians are NO HELP about “drug free” helps for HBP or high cholesterol
Primary Care Docs are intested in this or that drug because they get FREE SAMPLES from drug reps who “push” their “drug cures” on everyone.
How then do you explain my HMO PA who has no samples to offer. She too suggests Lisinopril and then must figure out how to get it at a reasonable price.
I went to the doctor’s about two years ago. I complained about loss of erection during sex. Doctors put me on high blood pressure meds, which seem to have made me not even have any erections. I have virtually begged them for help, asking for viagra, ciallis, or anything. I am at the point where I consider it to be a quality of life issue. I have high sexual desire, buy absolutely no ability to act upon it. It is driving me virtually crazy. Every time I go to the doctors, complaining about this, they give me a medication that makes things even worse. Now they have me on anti-depressants, and I have been on them for months. At this point, I haven’t been able to communicate effectively with them, even though I have been adamant about how strongly I feel.
You hear people often say, they wouldn’t want to live if someone had to change their diaper, or if they couldn’t feed themselves. I feel that my complete loss of sexual function dwarfs those other issues, and frankly, I am considering the ultimate option for dealing with this. I simply don’t know how to get through to the doctors. I have seen many, and they all get kind of a tunnel vision thing going where all they see is my blood pressure is slightly elevated (140/78 without meds) I have been through all kinds of cardiac testing. I don’t smoke, drink, and eat healthy. I workout 7 days a week, with intense cardio workouts. I am about at my rope’s end, though with my inability to get help. I have wonderful insurance, but simply can’t get one doctor to listen to the words coming out of my mouth in that my greatest problem is my loss of sexual function, loss of confidence as a result of this. I know it seems shallow, but I’ve been a very sexual person my whole life. I simply am running out of options, and don’t know where to turn for help, or if at this point, I even want help. My wife left me a few months ago, over this issue, and we were high school sweethearts, and were married for 35 years. I just don’t know what the hell is wrong with the doctors these days, they act like robots.
Wow, your situation sounds drastic! If your bp is 140/78 without medications and what your doctors have been giving you is causing you so much grief, I would see about getting off the meds! Quality of life is really important, and life is just too short to have your life ruined due to prescription drugs. Unfortunately, doctors are quick to give drugs, even when the complaint is due to the other drugs they are giving you! I would try to get off the drug merry go round, and see how you feel.
Get a doctor that listens to you, maybe you need to see a naturopathic doctor.
Your blood pressure isn’t that bad maybe concentrated fish oil, liquid co q 10 in am you can get it at Costco keep in refrigerator take early am can affect your sleep if take too late, cut the acid foods out they inflame your body and vessels, consider going vegan or partial they have the fake meats now, fake cheese some of its okay. As an expierement go on vegetables for a few days and check pressure, deep breathe several times an hour, don’t smoke.
Don’t just stop medications some are very dangerous just to stop you can have rebound hypertension where your blood pressure goes sky high much higher than it ever has been which could cause you to stroke or have a heart attack.
There are doctors who listen, you need a new one.
Dear Kevin
I did not leave my husband of 32 years and the father of 5, though those meds – lisinopril and metoprolol completely messed him up the same way, even worse …doctors did not listen… he decided to leave us, made this decision after all his tests came out fine, he was diagnosed with severe depression (also a side effect)less than a week before tragic death… he could not stand degradation of otherwise the most amazing, healthiest, funniest, loving, smart, intelligent human being… our loss is unbearable…
so, please find the alternative way ASAP, traditional meds will kill you… sexual disfunction is not the worst side effect… they will kill you… seek holistic doctors… I would, if I could drive… sorry…
and eliminate stress (?!).. it helps, too…
Why don’t u see a sexologist?
i had opent heart and valve replacement 5 1/2 yrs ago. ive been on metropolol 50 mg 2 times a day, lasix, cumadin ect ect over the last 2 yrs or so libido has fallen to zero. general health seems stable BP 120/75. i have thought about vigra or some other stimulant but i dont want to rock the boat and create more problems. i am 68 yrs old and not ready to hang up my spurs just yet and in my mind i still have have the desire but dont seem to be able to get the action going. guess im just going to be living with it.
ask your doctor if another blood pressure med may give you less sexual side effects
Metoprolol is used to treat chest pain (angina) and high blood pressure (hypertension). By lowering high blood pressure, this drug helps prevent kidney problems and strokes. It belongs to a group of drugs called beta-blockers, which is also used to treat or prevent heart attacks International Drug Mart.com
I have been on Metoprolol since June 12, 2011. My sexual desire has been dramatically lowered. I use to be very interested, now, I’m not. my husband and I have been married for 29 years and enjoy our life together, I just wish I felt better. my happiness seems to have deminished some too. I never felt like this on my Altace. I was happy. now I don’t have the energy to do anything or go anywhere:(
Very nice site!
Very nice site!
Go to a good urologist. I had a similar problem and after a thorough exam my doc agreed that my symptoms could be caused by the BP meds I was taking. He prescribed half-doses of Viagra and it did the trick (pardon the pun). 🙂
Two points;
* I had to discontinue ALL beta-blockers, they caused me to “nod” out at work. Doctors don’t seem to understand, we’re all NOT 80 year olds confined to cushy hospitals/rest homes all day like they are!!
* Many BP meds and Statins erode our bodies zinc supply. Consider supplementals to re-gain sexual prowess. I’m finding that taking 25mgs 3x/week does me well! If you develop a persistent headache cut back to 2x/week. Zinc, inexpensive, tends to be available in 50mgs, just cut in half; exact halfs are irrelevant
COZAAR (Losartan) is the best choice if you only have to be on one medicine, it can even give you a stronger erection than before. If you have to take two different types of medicine to control your HBP, you can combine COZAAR with AMLOR ( Amlodipine ), this won’t give you big erection problems… And remember that being fit also helps…I was sick of doctors not understanding and not giving a monkey about erectile dysfunction problem…I went to see a sexologist…they know which tablets affect your erection or your sex drive….hope this will help a lot of you ! Happy New Year by he way…
PS: Take your blood pressure properly, rest for 5 mn sitting down, take it…rest for 5 mn and so on 3 times in a row… the lowest measurement is the one you keep…do this when you get up and when you go to bed, 3 days in a row…
In regards to your reply, I did not indicate Metoprolol but I did indicate, Methformin, verapami.
I was on ExForge for about 3 years & was hospitalized twice this year after blacking out in the doc’s office both times.. After 4 days & every test imaginable the summation was that I’m a 62 yr old male in excellent health so, it must be something I’m taking! Well, don’t all if us have to list all meds we are taking upon admittance to any doctor or hospital? Totally overlooked this twice in my case & I was so ill I asked God to bring me home just to stop the agonizing pain & continuous vomiting that wouldn’t stop.. They took me off ExForge & put me on Metoprolol & I feel like a eunuch.. At this point I’m ready to try anything that gets me off Rx meds.. My sexual digress only occurred once I was put on these BP meds.. Any suggestions are appreciated..
I would like to know if felopidine do cause bad breath as a result of side effect of this medication.
Are there other beta blocker besides metoprolol that work as well, or better? I am at the Max with metoprolol & need to lower BP still.
