Q: Are there any natural diuretics?
A: Since it is spring, dandelion comes to mind. This is the time of year dandelion greens are available at the market. They are great in a salad and may act as a diuretic. Click here to learn about the uses of dandelion and medicine. For recipes using dandelion, click here.
Indeed, there are many natural diuretics, and not just dandelion. Celery is a natural diuretic, as are watermelon and cantelope. Parsley is a natural diuretic, as is alfalfa. Juniper berry is also an effective diuretic as are Buchu extract and Uva Ursi extract, although I have concerns only about the latter two if used on a long-term basis because of potential detrimental impacts to the kidneys and liver. If Dr. Rowena cared enough to learn about supplements, and advised taking supplements in appropriate circumstances, she would have provided a much better, more thorough, and similar answer. One last note, if you choose dandelion as one of the good supplements that you can take, make sure to get the dandelion leaf, not the dandelion root. An upside to dandelion is that it is a wonderul potassium supplement, as well. All the best!
THAT IS GREAT INFO YOU GAVE,AND APPRECIATED.
Oh, and one last thing, “doctor”, dandelion greens “may” act as a diuretic??? Don’t you know???
People do not react the same to herbs , or for that matter, prescription medicines. Sometimes dandelion greens will not work as a diuretic for one person and another might benefit. Take it easy on the Doc; she’s trying to be helpful.
Thanks for the admonition, Pat. However, I think the “doctor” is less helpful than more helpful. I would like to see her replaced with a doctor with clinical experience in a Wellness Care setting. You know, someone who actually practices in this area and has clinical experience with the issues. May I ask you, who gave the better answer…..the “doctor”, or the guy who is not a physician but has studied the heck out of this issue with practical experience?
Asparagus is also a mild natural diuretic- does not always work when people are salt loaded.
For persistently raised pressure best seek proper medical help – And do not believe everything ” natural ” is good.
Snakes are natural- so is whooping cough
Also (dried) Linden and Yarrow are herbs that can be added to Hawthorne herb and drank as a tea and the combo is often used by herbalists for high blood pressure.
I have high blood pressure and take meds for it. In the last several months, I now live at an elevation of 5,000 feet. I have either a dull headache or one with shape pain. Once I leave home and go down to a much lower elevation, headache is gone and stays gone until I return home and am there for about 10 – 12 hours and it returns. Have you heard of this before and if so, what causes this.
I have been taking Candesarten Cilexetil 8mg every evenining, about 1 hour after dinner for the last about one year. I wish to know its effects on sexual life and other problems it may create over the long run. I am 56 and the BP is under control due to this drug. Is it safe to take 1/4 of a viagra tablet when required. I’ll be grateful if you respond.
Niacinamide is a natural diuretic, not niacin, however. They each have different properties and are part of the B vitamin family, B-3. Niacinamide also is a blood pressure lowering agent, a vasodilator and has anxiety reducing properties. Dosage may vary for different uses.
Please Do Not publish my e-mail address. PLEASE reply to my question posted May 6, 2010 at 12:06 AM, regarding use of Candesarten.
For me, coconut water works fantastically well…besides giving me the additional potassium I need. Coffee I hear acts as a diuretic…but unfortunately I can’t drink coffee.
I noticed my blood pressure was really low when I was vacationing in the tropical islands . I drank coconut water from fresh young coconut everyday after a thirty minutes walk.I take b/p pills and diuretic but my bp never go down to 110/60 . When I came back here in States I stumbled in coconut water beverages in one of the health stores and I found out that it is high in potassium , magnesium and phosphorous and I wonder if it contributes to lowering of my b/p.It says its a natural isotonic beverage that contains correct balance of water and electrolytes .
