Night-time high blood pressure

Q: My BP is actually lower in the morning and higher before bedtime. I though it is supposed to be highest in the morning. What is going on?

A: Blood pressure is not constant throughout the day. Because of the circadian rhythm of our bodies, there is a natural elevation of pressure in the early morning. Depending upon when you are measuring your pressure, you may not be hitting this peak. Different activities during the day and timing of medications also affect your blood pressure. If you are getting higher than normal blood pressure measurements, no matter the time of day, you need to see your doctor.
