Q: I would like to start using a vitamin called pycnogenol. I am currently on beta blocker meds. I have researched that pycnogenol can lower hypertension; I have dips and highs throughout the day with BP. What are your thoughts?
A: I don’t believe that an extract from bark of a French pine tree is “necessary in trace amounts for normal body metabolic function” (see http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/vitamin). I consider pycnogenol a supplement, not a vitamin. You take supplements at your own peril. I understand fear of drugs and their side effects, but a supplement should be viewed as an untested drug of uncertain quality. If you are seeking a natural treatment for blood pressure, why take the risk of a supplement? The Resperate has been FDA cleared and clinically proven to lower blood pressure.
Pycnogenol is safe, plenty of medical studies showing that. 220 published clincal studies… do the research. Medicine has many more risks than supplements used correctly. If a patient can takew pycnogenol and less of a medication, the patient wins.
Medicine kills people everyday…3rd leading cause of death. Google it.
I doubt if the natural supplements for HBP can do you any more harm than the drugs for HBP that the doctors prescribe and they could help. I received an advertizement for a product which contains vitamin V7,grape seed extract and blueberry extract and they claim it can lower blood pressure just as good as the drugs. I take a natural supplement for prostrate which work better than the drugs with no side effect. Therefore I am willing to take the chance on a natural supplement to lower my BP.
Pycnogenal can definitely help some people reduce their blood pressure. While you are at it, don’t overlook the potential of other supplements to help you!
Pomegranate is nature’s ACE inhibitor.
Parsley, dandelion leaf, uva ursi, celery, juniper berry, and others are natural diuretics which will not deplete electrolytes but rather are good mineral enhancers.
Niacin is great, but not the time release kind. This takes a gradual increase in dosage over time to minimize the niacin flush.
Good luck to you, and all the best!!
p.s.
I don’t listen to a thing the “good doctor” Rowena says when it comes to natural remedies including supplements that indeed help many, many people control their hypertension. She is a “died in the wool” AMA liner to the hilt!
All the best!!
