Q: I have read several articles that recommend using Whey Protein to help lower blood pressure. However it contains the amino acids Phenylalanine and Tyrosine both which should not be used by people with high blood pressure. When I have tried to use Whey protein my blood pressure increases and my heart races. Is the Whey causing this? Are there any protein powders safe for those with high blood pressure?
A: The trouble with most supplements is you don’t really know what you are getting. Some brands have higher standards than others. Unfortunately controls are not put on the manufacturers like there are on drug companies. Clearly you are having problems with the brand you selected. If you search the web you will find plenty of whey protein supplement sites that claim their powder will lower your blood pressure. I don’t know if they are safe. Many food products can be hazardous to your health. Take a look at the list of recent recalls
I use Immunocal the only bio-active whey protein on the market. I have extreme high blood pressure. been using Resperate, also on Clonidine, Hydrochlorothiazide, Furosemide (to keep congestive heart failure at bay), Atacand, and Norvasc. finally in the control zone . . . lost 20lbs. quite frankly the Immunocal has literally saved my life. Been using it for over 13 years. Had an angiogram in the spring and I was ruled clear in both heart and renal arteries. I have multiple chemical sensitivities and quite bad reactions to many of the drugs. took a long time to find the doses needed.
Whey that is not bio-active will not have the same effects. Immunocal is deliberately shored up in a number of essential amino acids. combined with Omega-3’s and extra magnesium has been a definite help.
Immunocal has method of use patents (pharaceutical grade patents) and is backed by more than 30 years of research. Discovered by Dr. Gustavo Bounous (the father of enteral medicine). Definitely an effective regimen in the war on high blood pressure.
When i was in the hospital i was able to demonstrate to the nurses how using the techniques of Resperate one could reduce their blood pressure.
I should have added that Immunocal makes no health claims about its product. It is listed in the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) and the CPS in Canada, FDA approved and has an NPN number in Canada.
Whey protein powder should not be a problem just be sure to find one without casein added. Casein is derived from dairy and can injure the endothelium. The key here is to always keep in mind those foods that contribute to endothelial dysfunction. Everyone should read online about endothelial dysfunction and disease epidemiology.
By definition whey has no casein. It is the by-product of cheese making where the casein in made into cheese.
