Q: I am a hypertensive patient taking amlodipine-5mg tablet once after dinner. My bp is under control with change in life style, less salt intake ,walking and weight reduction. Does taking amlodipine have an affect on urination? I have to go to restroom after 5 hrs of sleep. Please reply. Thanks
A: Your blood pressure medicine can make you retain fluid. Or the veins in your legs may not work as well as they used to. This can cause fluid retention. When you lay down it is easier for your body to get rid of fluid. It is possible this is why you have to go to the bathroom after several hours of sleep. Check your ankles before you go to bed and night and then again in the morning. If your ankles look smaller in the morning, you are retaining fluid that gets eliminated during sleep.

Wow. One of the things that must might be important to know is how old you are? Are you a male or a female? If you are beyond a middle aged male might you have a prostate issue?
These kinds of answers by the “good doctor” are meaningless without a better history.
This is very informative I will start checking my ankles from now on Thanks
I am also on 5mg of Amlodipine and experiencing same frequent urination, lightheadedness, blurry vision and cramps from time to time. I now take it every other day and this has reduced the side effects. I hear it is about the safest medication for BP. Not sure if i am doing the right thing but I sure feel better taking it every other day.
