Q: Why has my husband been given 3 different medications for hypertension? Why give three different medications for the same symptom? His dosages are, 1of 10mg another of 10mg and another of 5mg.
A: Your husband has been given three different drugs because his high blood pressure was not controlled with one medication. The symptom of high blood pressure is not able to be controlled in many people with just one medicine. Doctors start adding pills when one isn’t enough to achieve control. Although there may just be one symptom, it can take more than one drug to control or cure other diseases besides high blood pressure. Too often people depend on pills to get their disease into control rather than making needed life style changes. To learn more about a healthier way of life go to this page at AmericaOntheMove.org.
On average in Canada it takes 4 medications to control HBP. The first line of defence is usually a water pill like Hydrochlorothaizide, a beta blocker, a channel blocker and an angiotensin. The beta blocker and c blockers are stroke preventers and the angio is a heart regulator. They all seem to work well together. Some Drs add a chloresterol reducer (statin)if required. (they can cause leg pain) Recently it was determined that taking a angiotensin and a beta blocker may be redundant. I am now taking only three pills for my HBP and no statin. It seems to be working very well for me. Reduce excessive salt intake and lose some weight. It will surprise you how much that affects your BP. Good Luck.
I ned help controllong nmy high blood pressure. I take atenalol and lisinopren
About 5 years ago I was also taking atenolol and lisinopril, BP was over 160. I lost 30 pounds and quit drinking! My BP dropped like a stone. Now I’m on only 10mg of lisinopril. Don’t know your situation, but I personally know that weight and alcohol were my problem. By the way, I do have a drink or two, but only about once a week. Don’t really miss the heavy drinking I used to do. Good luck to you!!
Please state your age, skin colour and current blood pressure readings as that may be useful in determining the class of hypertensive drugs to use.
Another reason for multiple BP meds is that while a higher dose of any one BP med may control one’s blood pressure but the side effects of the high dose are not tolerable. As one gets older side effects of the medications are often not tolerated well, so low dosages of more than one kind of med may solve the problem.
Recnt headache ,possibly cluster ,not migraine the medical doctor recommended tylenol, i took way more than i ought, did not help with the pain but the blood pressure reading soared to 150 /80.
usually i am 130 /70 even 120 /70 , is this an anomaly as a result of overdonig tylenol?
Ihad 4 stents put in and was put on 4 medications my BP was still at230’s over 130’s my doctor wanted to give me more medication. I suggested finding why the others were not working and found I had another artery blocked in one of my kidneys. Do research first to find out why.
