Q: I take Ramipril and Benroflumethazide for high blood pressure. As I have read that most heart attacks and strokes happen at night or early morning, I take the endrofluzide in the morning and the Ramipril at 6pm. At a recent admission to hospital the insisted I took the Ramipril in the morning. Is there a right time? I am also on medication for Atrial Fibrilation.
A: The best time to any medication is the time that works best for you. You want a time that is convenient and easy to remember so you don’t forget to take your medication. Taking drugs at the same time of day every day allows the body to evenly process the drug. You avoid big swings in the amount of drug that is in your body at any one time.
You get steady protection. Time of day can help with side effects. Certain drugs are recommended to be taken at night as some side effects are masked by sleep.
Recent research found that taking blood pressure meds at nite was best because blood preassure is highest upon waking and a lower morning pressure would mean fewer MIs or strokes.
I take chlorthalidone which has a diuretic effect.
If i dont take it by early afternoon at the latest, im up peeing all nigh:-(
What would u recommend?
I found just the opposite to be true. MY BP was always lowest in the morning and evening and peaking during the afternoon. I generally took my meds around lunchtime. All meds have different half-life’s so you should know the half life of the medication you take and plan your dosing accordingly based on your BP trends. According to my doctor afternoon BP rises are fairly typical.
You are correct it is an individual thing and should be based on what your trend is I never understand when anyone focuses on some research, they are relavant but a person must realize nothing is carved in stone one size does not fit all
Just an interesting point of viewResearch can say what they want everyones systemn is different I tried taking it at night around 6pm it did not help it became elevated a person has to connect with their body thos result from research are guidelines what enviornment were these studies done? And I had anormal blood prssure ( my bp usal was in the rge of110/80-120/75) when I had a stroke 2 years later after being placed( on a Birth control pill ) after being placed on warfarin I developed Hypertension. Well Lucky for me I Go to a Dr but I also chose a gualified alternative professional so I have reduced the Presciption to half and The goal is to eventual be free from it.
I agree with Lynn. Take your BP meds maybe 1 hour before bed. That seems to work best for me.
And, with regard to the compliance issue, which still seems to be a fairly large problem, the solution has been around for a number of years. Buy a 7-day pill box!!! Load it up every Sunday morning for the next week. Then, you can keep track of your own compliance almost perfectly, esp. with consistent dosing before bedtime. In fact, I have 2 of them. One small one for the ACE inhibitor I’m taking and a second large one for certain vitamins which can be large pills. Not sure they do much, as the research is very mixed on any benefits. And, of course, it’s best to get needed nutrients from a really good diet itself rather than any pills, those fruits and vegetables we’re supposed to be eating every day.
Research who pays for the research with a good nutritional supplement you will and should notice results after a few weeks all supplements are not created equal. If Your digestive systemn is not great can we absorb nutrients from our food, As an individual ages sometimes digestion declines,Yes getting from food is best do we know the quality of our food anymore. How long have the been hanging around what type of sail.. the stress some people are under also depletes the nutrition, Ge to know your body data is just that the pills takes symptoms way it sure does not correct the problem and some disease can be reversed but for most people it is easier to take a pill instead of doing some work, do not believe everything the media feeds you, A combination of traditional along with sound Alternatives works best for me, I am in partnership with my Dr He works with me.If a Dr does not listen he or she needs a divorce, I am a retired Health professional so I have seen it all.People should become involved with their care by becoming Knowledgeable
I am struggling to take 4 meds–Procardin XL30 1 daily in AM; Diovan 160/12.5/with HCT same time in AM; Diovan 160 (no HCT) in PM; Chlondine 0.1 mg 3 times day and Coreg 80 mg at bedtime. Can’t really figure out what is best time to take all these meds. My BP was controlled until about a year ago and I have tried several meds without success since then. (I have been eating healthy and exercising for decades, and never overweight (5 ft 9 in and 138 lbs.)
Very strong family history of high BP). Just bought a Resperate and trying my best to get off these meds.
pLEASE TRY TO FIND A WAY TO WORK WITH EITHER A phYSICIAN THAT USES COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE OR FIND A GOOD NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN’
look at working with emotions Just because your family has something does not mean anything in a lot of cases you have to get rid of that program that will take work , If You can afford to Look into Dr Whittaker her is a MD who uses alternatives
I hope you consider some of these suggestions anything can change just keep asking to be show the right people to help you and if you ask often enough it will come to you I know . I have reduced the amount of Drugs prescribed so under the right care you can
You should take into account the circadian rythm for taking pills. When you are at about 3.000 feet above sea level your heartbeat is beginning at 4:00 to 12:00 am 72 beats per minute, from 12:00 am to 8:00 pm ranging from 85 to 100 beats per minute and from 8:00 to 4:00 am it meay come down to 45 or 50 bpm. So based on that rythm you can select what is best for you.
My blood pressure is alway good first thing in the morning then rises through the day but after I am home and before I go to bed it starts to come down on its own without any medication. So would the best time for me be around noon or should I look for something to help with stress?
That is exactly what I do as my BP rises between 2-6pm then drops in the evening. I can feel my face starting to flush when it rises. If I take the meds in the morning early I get real lightheaded and spacey (low BP) and I don’t like feeling that way.
I have systolic orthostatic hypertension and vasovagal syncope with a history of head injuries so doctors don’t advise medication; theory being the greater risk is falling with potential head injury than uncontrolled high BP. Sitting systolic ranges from 125-170, standing 100/130; is lower in the morning, begins going up late afternoon/evening and highest during the night. I’m 68 years old, eat a healthy low salt diet, not over weight, exercise most days, elevate head of the bed, have been using Resperate for a month with no significant improvement. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
What kind of salt use Himalayan salt manage sress
check a therapist that uses craniosacral thrapy it may help. the foods you eat are they whole foods if you eat things packaged canned or boxed look out for potassium salt even sugar just those change may help
deep breathing find some type of relaxation. Visualization that your bp is normal daily over time it will become more managable but you have to believe that this will happen. Find a Good Acupunturist ( if you can stand needles it works. You could research chaga mushroom,
I now take BP meds a few hours before retiring, which provides good readings upon waking as well as during the entire day. Earlier, when I took them upon rising, I had BP readings that were unsatisfactory most of the day, with very unsatisfactory readings during my first waking hours, almost as if the meds had little effect. Taking the meds in the late evening, a few hours before bed, has been a very useful and important discovery for me, and I believe it has also minimized the number of meds needed to keep good control. Also, thank you for this very helpful online forum on BP!
Here is the web address to read the abstract from the research that showed the benefit of taking at least one blood pressure at night.

It is worth a try the fact remains its data thats all and it will not work for everyone so just because reaerch says something does not mean much . IT di not work for me it actualy made it worse. SomePeople also have research to serve their interest
I agree with Valerie, research can be very self serving, especially if large amounts of money are involved.BP Meds nearly killed me, sentenced me to a grotty life of awful side effects. When I asked various doctors about natural , homeopathic remedies, they were extremely dismissive, using the well worn phrase”not scientifically proven” Well, what is ? A lot of research is highly questionable.
I take atorvastatin 20mgs tablet in the evening(high cholesterol)not happy about the product due to a lot of negative press inc a blood test that showed raised lipids in the liver. My doctor did not suggest that I stopped it.Also I take 1 bendroflumethiazide 2.5mg a.m.and and 1 amlodipine 5mg per day.Currently My bp readings are 150/78.Anyone else on similar medications
with same concern about taking statins.A friend takes same meds as me and has been badly affected by muscular
pain,another side effect of statins.
