Q: Which is more important to watch the upper or lower pressure reading?
A: Both the upper and lower readings need to be controlled. Just having a high upper number reading, systolic hypertension, is more common in the elderly.

Systolic Vs. Diastolic Blood Pressure
I guess you would consider me to be the elderly – I’m 80 years old. My cardiologist just added a new medication. My systolic was varying 140 – 155 with the new med it was reduced to 110 – 135. Recently I started to have a few reading 87 , 94. I had no signs of being tired or dizzy. Is this normal? How low can the systolic go without any concern?
The problem I have had in using an arm mtonior is that I am short and round. It’s the short part that makes the most difference: the rigid metal piece that helps tighten the band is too long for my upper arm, whether it’s the normal or the longer strap. My only choice is the wrist mtonior, or no home measurement at all. I’d hate to think what juvenile hypertensives have to do go in daily or weekly to their provider?
