Q: A friend of mine suggested black cohosh to help relieve menopause symptoms. I’ve done further investigation and see that it could also possibly have a blood pressure lowering effect. Is this true?
A: For many years, the herb Black Cohosh has been looked at as an aid for menstrual problems. More recently there is some suggestion it may help with high blood pressure. Hot flashes lessen with time so use of black cohosh typically is short term. I am not aware of any good studies showing the safety of black cohosh for long term use as would be needed for blood pressure control. To learn more about this herb go to this article on the Office of Dietary Supplements site and this article on The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Pretty impressive……..the first answer that I have seen for any natural therapies that is not negative, but rather the “good doctor” seems to at leas moved to neutral on at least one supplement.
There are many supplements that can assist with high blood pressure. These include fish oil, natural diuretics (dandelion leaf, parsley, juniper berry, celery, uva ursi, and others), and nature’s ACE inhibitor is pomegranate!
Much can be learned from googling the subject! Good luck, and all the best!!
I would like to take Hawthorn and Reishi Mushroom for bp. I am on 3 bp meds, have been for 20 years. My doctor does not know if they are safe to combine them and told me to Google. My pharmacist says to ask my Doctor – help. I really would like to reduce my meds and go more herbal. Who can I trust to ask.
I started taking Krill Oil as fish oil is said to bring it down, but when I take it I develop a banging head and flush – doc not sure if it is the mix or not.
I have also had success with Hawthorne and reishi mushroom
Be careful when you try natural. They don’t usually inform you of side effects. Fish Oil can cause upset stomach and diarrhea in many people. I was unable to take it. Also it can thin your blood and if you are on aspirin or a blood thinner this could be dangerous. One of the health books I recive tells you that Hibus tea is great for HBP> What they don’t tell you is that this tea was used for constipation many years ago. On people that are not constipated it could cause diarrhea. Most natural supplements have side effects that vary among different people. There are many natural supplements that work better than drugs without side effects such as for Prostrate problems .
Do you know any good natural supplement for the prostate ??Thank you ,Jerry.
What is your recommendation for going off Oxycontin. I have been on it for chronic back, neck, hip, etc pain, all due to a fall I had many many years ago, like25 yrs ago. I am on 80mg three times per day. What is your recommendation for getting off these. I know you cant just quit it due to the detoxing part of it plus apparently it is a shock to your organs. Also, what could I take that is NOT a narcotic and with no addiction, in place of the oxycontin???? Thanks so much.
Where do I get the best advice of combining bp meds with herbal supps from. Not the doc that’s for sure. Bit scary to just Google and hope for the best. Should I seek a professional in herbal supps.
I am wondering what is better, a cuff BP monitor or Wrist monitor. I find the wrist monitor easier to use. Thanks…
Take a lot of supplements for BP but Black Cohosh seemed very helpful when I was taking it. Stopped when I ran out….. but this question was a good reminder of the benefits I received while using it. Will go back to it!
Is Hibiscus flower tea good for lowering blood presure?
